Summary: Although prepared for his absence, Bella still finds herself looking for Edward at lunch the day following the blood typing. She also discovers a more unpleasant side to Lauren who gives her unfriendly glances and makes malicious comments about her to Mike.
That night, Bella asks Charlie about the camping at ‘Goat Rocks’, where Edward had said he was going to be that weekend. Her father replies that it is not a very good place for camping at this time of year, as there are too many bears.
On Saturday, Bella goes on the previously arranged day trip to First Beach with a group from school. While there, she meets an old friend, Jacob Black, the son of a tribal elder of the Quileutes tribe.
Driven by a comment by one of the other La Push kids named Sam, Bella flirts awkwardly with Jacob to get him to explain why the Cullens are not allowed on the lands belonging to the Quileutes.
Jacob tells her about the old tribal stories of how the Quileutes are supposed to be descended from wolves, their ancestors being werewolves. He also tells her about the only known enemy of the werewolf – the ‘cold ones’, (vampires), who made a treaty with his great-grandfather many years ago, which resulted in them agreeing to stay off Quileute land. Jacob explains that the ‘cold ones’ who made the treaty are in fact the Cullens who are currently living in Forks.
Although Jacob says he does not believe the stories, Bella is visibly shaken by his tales and has to try hard to disguise her shock from Jacob.
