The Twilight Saga Breaks a USA Today Record

We’ve often said that the only way in which the Twilight novels and Harry Potter novels can be compared is the fact that they were books directed at younger audiences, written by previously unpublished women, they have tremendous sales totals, and they have fanatic fan followings. In fact we just turned down participating in an webevent that wanted a faceoff to determine which was better, because it’s not a contest. Reading, in our opinion, shouldn’t be a contest. Especially since the books are differnt genres, it would be like asking what’s better a cubist Picasso or an impressionist Monet.

USA Today just announced that the Twilight Saga broke a record previously held by Harry Potter. So you can see how the sales total comparison is an interesting one.

According to USA Today:

“The four-book Twilight series has sunk its fangs into USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list — with no signs of letting go. Meyer’s domination of the list for the past 12 months has smashed records that until now had belonged to J.K. Rowling.

Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the teen-vampire romance series, entered the list at No. 1 on Aug. 2, 2008. Its sales and those of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, the first three books, have remained staggering.

This week, Meyer’s novels are Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 on USA TODAY’s list.

Rowling, overall, has sold more books than Meyer — her seven-book series about boy wizard Harry Potter has 143 million copies in print in the USA, while Meyer has sold 40 million copies of her four books. But Rowling can’t match Meyer’s control of the list.”

Check out the whole story on USA Today. It doesn’t take sides in which novels are better, but it provides an interesting insight into their respective sales patterns and histories.

Rotten Tomatoes: Best Twilight Sites

Jen from Rotten Tomatoes has a listing up of what she considers to be the best Twilight sites and we’ve made the list. As our friends in the UK would say, “We’re rather chuffed!” Here’s what Rotten Tomatoes had to say:

“For a comprehensive catalog of all things Twilight (we’re not even just talking the movies, since the site originated in response to Stephenie Meyer’s books), there is none better than Twilight Lexicon. It is just that — a veritable encyclopedia of details regarding the Twilight Saga world, containing sections of meticulously researched character bios (with chapter citations, natch), a Saga-spanning timeline, and detailed chapter summaries of every single book.”

Arson at Forks HS

This just in from Chris Cook, editor of the Forks Forum.

“On Monday morning, Forks Police Department Deputy Chief of Police Lloyd Lee reported to the Forks Forum that: “Early this morning around 0145 hours the on duty officer, Michael Rowley was flagged down in the area of the school and was told about a bench in front of the high school was on fire. The responding officer put the fire out with the fire extinguisher he carries in his vehicle.

“After investigating we found not only was the bench on fire, but the arsonist tried to burn down the Forks High School sign. A one foot in diameter charred area was found behind the sign. Also found was a broken window on the north side of the high school.”

Awkward Moment

Call this innocent bystander fallout. The unfortunate result of the Rachelle and Summit situation is that castmates are now stuck in the middle being asked questions that puts them in a tough spot. No matter what their feelings are, it’s a no win situation, if they take a side it’s Catch 22.

“Known for the horrific scar on her[meaning the character of Emily] face, Tinsel revealed that the application took hours and that it was a painful process to go through. Convention Info

The TwiCon Convention just wrapped this weekend and our inbox is filled with questions just like these:

“Whenever you get a chance to catch your breath, I would be interested to hear your perspective of the various Twilight events such as SSIF, Twi/Tour, TwiCon, Comic Con, etc.  What are the similarities, differences, etc. that would help a Twilight supporter navigate the various options.”

“How would you rate TwiCon compared to Creation Cons?”

“I just heard the next TwiCon was in Las Vegas in 2010. I thought there was a TwiCon  in Chicago.”

“Which convention does the Lexicon run?”

__________________________________________

So,  to wade through murky waters here we are going to try to provide some info without specifically talking about the pros or cons of any specific convention.  We are going to be Switzerland. The reason for that is that we have a bias having formally presented at three cons, personally knowing people involved in another, and having several upcoming appearances at others.  It wouldn’t be cool for us given that to “rate a con”.  It just wouldn’t be fair to groups that we haven’t worked with.  So, were going to stay out of the what makes one good or bad (which is highly subjective) and just go for info 101. If you have a comment on any particular convention experience (pro or con), feel free to put it in the comments.

1. The Lexicon doesn’t run any conventions. We’ll run their press releases, or run media reports and videos that come out after. We ourselves don’t run a convention. We can’t stop people from linking to the Lexicon. Just because our link is on a site doesn’t mean it’s a stamp of approval.

2. Any event we run a press release for has some kind of verifiable corporate structure like an event planning firm as part of the team or charitable organization backing it. So we don’t run things that have no support structure to them, or things that seem like Twilight is an afterthought or minuscule part of the event. We also won’t deal with a group whose releases are riddled with typos, conflicting info, etc.  because it speaks to attention to detail and that’s incredibly important when running a con. If they can’t be bothered to spell check and proofread, catching multiple glaring errors, what else can’t they be bothered to do?

3. Every convention is different. You have to read the fine print as to what you get.  Some are very book driven with just discussion panels and events like barbecues. Others are very actor driven with no other programming. Others are in between. What makes one good or bad is largely down to what you are looking for.

4. Check out people’s past experiences with a particular convention group. How long have they been in the business. If it’s their first Twilight Con, have they previously done other cons like a Harry Potter or big events so you can see references? Google is your friend. If you want to know more about a particular convention or the people running it, Google the organizers’ names, companies, and fan reviews.

5. Fan forums discussion can be more helpful than news articles. Usually the press only gives an overview of any con. They tend to pop in the first day do a quickie interview with management and the first fan they find and then they are out the door.  It’s usually a filler “local happenings” story that while fluffy and fun, isn’t usually that helpful. So fan forum discussion can usually give you a feeling for a group.

6. TwiCon, Summer School in Forks, Twi-Tour, Hub Productions, Eternal Twilight, Accio Con are all run by differnt people.  A lot of people talk about “I’m going to a twi con this weekend.” meaning that they are going to a “twilight convention” and they just shortened the name. It does not necessarily mean that they went to TwiCon which just took place this past weekend in Dallas.

Jackson Rathbone’s Celebrity Crush

Back before Twilight opened in theaters, back before Jackson Rathbone was a household name, and back before recent news events, Jackson Rathbone did an interview with Seventeen Magazine.  Various people have now unearthed the months old interview because of question number 2:

“Who is your celebrity crush?

Bryce Dallas Howard. I think she’s an incredible actress and such a beautiful, young woman. I also think she’s way out of my league, so I’ll just keep dreaming.”

It would seem to us that that iconic “league thing” no longer applies. We’re wondering if Jackson is going to turn as red as Bryce’s hair when they meet. 🙂 We’re sure they’ll be good frineds and have a laugh over this.  You can see the original Seventeen interview here.
