Mike Welch Needs $5.00 to Help Get Clean Drinking Water

Mike Welch is joining with The Thirst Project to build wells. Here is what the organization (which was founded a mere three years ago by college students) has to say about what they are doing and why:

“Water. Water is the problem. Water is the solution. It might not cost as much to build and maintain a freshwater well as you think. The average cost for us to build a freshwater well in most developing nations is just $5,000. That means an entire COMMUNITY of people’s lives can be forever saved with just $5K.

All we have to do is reach the water that already exists in aquifers usually only 100-300 feet underground. One well can provide up to 500 people with clean water for 20 years! One well can save lives.

Once wells are completed, we form a water committee within each community that is educated about the importance of hand-washing and proper sanitization and is responsible for ensuring that the well stays clean and maintained.

When you bring safe water into a community, disease immediately drops by 80%! Child mortality drops by 99% overnight! The solution is too simple and the victory points are too easily attainable for us to continue to ignore the #1 killer of children globally. The solution is water. The solution is us. The solution is YOU.”

Mike is asking people to forgo a trip to a fast food place for just one day and donate $5.00 to this cause. When the funds are raised,he’s actually making the commitment himself to go to Africa and be part of the building crew. There are a lot of celebrities that attach their names to projects, but hats off to Mike for actually taking part in the most hands on way possible.

Edited: We emailed Mike to see if there is a way to make a donation greater than $5.00. As soon as we have Mike’s answer we will let you know.

EDIT 2: Here is Mike’s Answer, “@TwilightLexicon That’s very nice of you. 🙂 Here’s the situation. This campaign is structured like a contest and the “winner” will be coming to Africa with me. {if 5,000 people donate ;)}. Therefore, you can only give 5 dollars, per ONE person. I think this might be a legal issue. However, you are more than welcome to donate additional funds to the organization OUTSIDE of my thing. The need is really great and every dollar helps. Thanks for asking. ”

Edit3: Apparently you can legally do more on that interface. So let’s say you want to donate$15.oo, you would just go through the process 3 times. You can also do what we did which was what we tweeted to Mike: @MichaelWelchAct Ok we did a $5.00 donation on the $5.00 club interface and then we did another one for a different amount on the general donation button at the top of their site. In the comments to the seller we asked them to please credit the amount to your overall goal. We hope you make your goal!

Ad Issues

We have an on and off problem with the ads that appear in the Lexicon. We don’t like ads anymore than the next person, but  they keep us up and running. However, they aren’t supposed to play any music, sounds, etc without you the user being able to stop it. Ads are served up regionally, so often what is on our screens, may not match yours. If there is an issue, we don’t know unless someone tells us.

So if you are experiencing a problem with ads that autoplay with no way to turn them off, please do the following so we can have the faulty ad removed. Take a screen capture of the ad (hit control and print screen at the same time while viewing the ad) then open up Word and hit paste. The image should then appear there. Please email the document to [email protected] and please tell us where you live so we know what region is being affected.

Also our ads are supposed to be family friendly. This means that they shouldn’t have content that you wouldn’t find on American network TV (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, WB) during the 8:00am-10:00pm major viewing hours. So if you see something that looks like it would not be shown on network TV, please also let us know.

Eclipse DVD Pricing Guide

As we have been saying, there isn’t any difference between the content on the Eclipse DVD’s, unlike New Moon where there were significant differences retailer to retailer.  This time out, if you get the two disc at one retailers, it’s just like the two disc at another retailer. The only differnces are in packaging. Things like one retailer will give you a free poster, another will have a tee shirt giveaway. For details like that, our friends over at Twilighters Anonymous did a fabulous job highlighting those types of perks.

So today while being home sick, I did some research. Here’s what I was able to find out by surfing the web and making a few phone calls. Keep in mind this doesn’t take into consideration having holiday coupons from any of the retailers, which could make a pretty big difference.

I think I got most major places if I forgot something, chime in in the comments!

Edited: The blanks meant I was having trouble getting a consistent price, no that they didn’t have it.

James Franco Hosting the Oscars: The Twilight, Robert Pattinson, Bill Condon Connection

James Franco explained it last night on Jimmy Kimmel. Look for it at around the 2:55 mark.

It’s not the first time James Franco has mentioned Twilight. His first nod was back in August when he mentioned it to Esquire. Then he mentioned it again to MTV’s Josh Horowitz at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Signed Kellan Lutz Poster Giveaway

MESKADA, co-starring Kellan Lutz,  opens in theaters and premieres on Video On Demand TODAY December 3, 2010.

To celebrate the release, we are giving away full sized signed Meskada posters signed by Kellan to two lucky fans. Just reply in the comments with what you love about Kellan, and we’ll pick two random people Saturday night at 11:59pm est.

MESKADA follows a small-town detective named Noah Cordin as he struggles to solve the brutal murder of a boy in the peaceful, affluent town of Hilliard. The killers left behind no clues at the crime scene, with the exception of a scrap of paper leading Cordin back to his hometown of Caswell. Here, Cordin and county detective Leslie Spencer consult with Cordin’s old friends, all of whom are suffering from the economic troubles that have plunged Caswell into near-destitution. As their search fails to turn up a suspect, feverish tensions rise between the towns of Hilliard and Caswell, until the film reaches its shocking climax.

Meskada captures a snapshot of quintessential American small-town life. The story calls to mind our nation’s history, the brutal clashes over land and territory, the class-divides and the improbable victories for equal opportunity. Meskada portrays a vivid picture of the rift between characters in two towns, people bound by loyalty, family, community, and a battle born of circumstances beyond their control.

Hit Fix Interviews David Slade For the Eclispe DVD Release

BryceeclipseHit Fix Spoke to David Slade for the Eclipse DVD release. The conversation gets a little technical, but it’s original material not likely to be rehashed in any other interview.

Was the largest set piece the vampire vs. wolves war scene?

Slade: I think the mountain top battle between Victoria, Edward, Riley, Sethwolf valor battle was probably the biggest most complex set piece. [I had to] make room in our schedule for me to go back and direct the key elements of that fight scene because the fight scene was like a three-act structure story. It’s not just, you know, a fight. It has a beginning, it has a middle, it has an end. It has various character traits that make things happen if they’re good. So, that fight sequence was one where the tree going over was a big part of the plot but was also part of the story because the story enveloped the character. The character of Victoria was that she was an escape artist. She always ran. And she was going to jump. She was going to get somewhere safe. She was always safe. So, a character is feeding into your fight. There’s no description in the book that she jumps into a tree. It was just like, “Well let’s make her jump into a tree because…” and you work that way. You work out the ideas through — she’s going to run away and she’s just to live another day but he’s going to have to find a way to bring her back with words. Still the character — even though it’s a fight, you know? – And then at a certain point he’s got to use words to goad her into the proximity it’s going to take to fight, you know? It’s a very, very structured thing. We didn’t shoot it for days on end but it was certainly one of the most complex things to engineer.  The actors went into training for it all and it was one of those things where I was solely kind of every day hammering away at until we shot it. And I think because there is a point where all of these things I’m talking about just randomly appear. They happen.
Slade: You know, in the end it was great in the first screening to hear everyone scream and cheer when Victoria dies. That worked.”
