New Moon and Eclipse Still Hang on to Midnight Sales Record

It was widely predicted that the latest installment of the Harry Potter franchise would upset the records set by the two most recent Twilight films. However the results fell short of what was widely thought to be a shoe-in for Harry Potter to overtake New Moon. Most  industry blogs were divided 50/50 on whether it would overtake Eclipse. In the end, Harry Potter didn’t overtake either of them in midnight sales(midnight sales cover tickets sold midnight until circa 10:00am).

According to MarketWatch:

““Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” made $24 million in its debut during the wee hours Friday, enough to pull into third place among films with midnight screenings, according to figures from box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

“Deathly Hallows” fell behind two films in the “Twilight” series. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” still is tops with its $30 million-plus debut earlier this year on June 30. And “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” comes in second at $26.3 million for its Nov. 20, 2009 midnight release.”

Regardless of the midnight showing results, Harry Potter will undoubtedly be in the top ten films this year and in all likelihood make the top five. The franchise is also set to overtake Star Wars as the most successful film franchise at the box office. Also in fairness to the Potter chain, Eclipse opened at roughly 4,400 theaters opening day while Potter opened at roughly 4,100. (Stats via Box Office Mojo).

What will really be interesting is if Harry Potter can do two things: 1) break the $300,000,000 mark, something it has only done twice 2) beat the $317,575,550 benchmark set back in 2001 with the first Harry Potter movie. To overtake Eclipse in total sales, Harry Potter needs to come in at over $300,531,751 by the time it finishes its run.

Twilight Fan Video Shot in the Portland Movie Locations

This was pretty creative. Lynn, Savanna and Olivia from www.ourtwilightcorner.com wrote in to tell us that “We are friends/relatives who had a crazy idea, like all fans, to make a video with Ke$ha’s song because it is sooooooo fitting… Check it out… Yay Team Twilight!!!!” They used the locations from the first film near Portland, Oregon to shoot this.

Jason Isaacs Team Jacob

The Belfast Telegraph, in doing Harry Potter coverage, asked actor Jason Issacs (Lucius Malfoy) what it was like working with Taylor Lautner on Abduction.  Abduction was filmed this summer in the Pittsburgh area and is scheduled for a 2011 release. The exact date is still TBA.

“It was interesting to see another young person who is universally known but very different to Daniel, Rupert and Emma. The Twilight phenomenon is different,” he said.

Jason added: “I am now – and have to be – Team Jacob, because Taylor is a lovely boy.”

The 47-year-old previously admitted to being apprehensive about the fight scenes.

“He’s been doing karate since he was six. I’ve done ten kickboxing lessons. We’ll see how that turns out! Hollywood decided he is the latest action hero apparently, and I am there in this film to make him look even more muscular. And I will do that,” he told BBC Radio 2.”

Chaske Spencer Hipster

chaskespencerheadshot2“There’s a good idea,” I think while stepping into a Williamsburg coffee shop to meet Chaske Spencer, the actor who plays Sam Uley in the Twilight films, “Hipster werewolves. Remember to pitch this TV concept.” That was before I saw Chaske, who is 6’1 and the guy next to Taylor Lautner looking menacingly hot in all the Twilight: New Moon posters: he smiled and waved me over.

“Haven’t we met before?” he starts out. We hadn’t, but if hipsterdom is defined as being too cool and aloof, Chaske doesn’t fit the bill at all. Like Sam, he is Native-American, and spends most of his down time on the Twilight set hanging out with the other wolves (Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Bronson Pelletier), but the similarities end there. Chaske (pronounced Chaz-KAY) is warm and laughs at everything, uses his fame to spotlight issues in the Native-American community, and has a stunningly wide breadth of topics he’s interested in. (He was on Parker Spitzer last night to talk about Prince William’s engagement, Washington politics, and his charity organization Shift the Power to the People.)

There is one other quality, of course, that Chaske shares with Sam. They are both really really, ridiculously good looking.”

Christian Serratos Lands New TV Role

Christian Serratos has just landed a role in a new ABC show. According to MTV:

“Twilight”‘s own Christian Serratos, who plays Bella’s bespectacled bud Angela, has just landed a lead role in the new as-yet-untitled Brenda Hampton pilot on ABC Family.

Deadline broke the news that Christian was cast along with Katelyn Tarver (“Big Time Rush”), Valerie Tian (“Juno”) and Ana Lucasey (“Lie to Me”) in the hour-long drama that follows four ethnically diverse teen girls attending a private school in California.”

Troix Magazine, that featured Christian in their most recent issue, put together this photo montage of some of the pictures used.

Collider Looking For a Twilight Superfan For DVD Review

eclipsebill

One of our very favorite entertainment blogs is run by  Collider. He doesn’t gush over Twilight, but he covers the story without getting snarky, and really that’s what we think many fans want from an entertainment site. Anyway, Steve (AKA Frosty) who runs Collider wants some help:

This is either going to be the best or worst decision I’ve made this month.

While we have a lot of great writers on Collider, I’ve decided to try and find a Twilight super fan to review our copy of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on Blu-ray.  Now I’m not looking for someone who thinks it’s the greatest movie ever made, and I’m not looking for someone who hates it either.  I’m going to try and locate someone who loves the books and the films and can do an impartial review, while also writing about all the special features, commentaries, and the extra things on the Blu-ray.”

Moviefone:The Great Movie Franchise Debate: Twilight and Harry Potter

On Tuesday, Laura debated Andrew from Mugglenet on which movie franchise did a better job: Harry Potter or Twilight. Several very specific categories were debated as picked by Moviefone, and we squared-off on roughly a half-dozen questions. We are happy to announce that Twilight as represented by Laura (as decided by two impartial Moviefone judges, who were guys) won!

It was all in good fun. We are still Harry Potter fans, and will be seeing the movie tonight! (Although there is a distinct possibility that the moderators of the Harry Potter site that Lori and Laura used to help run are plotting Laura’s demise.) We are definitely Team Switzerland on what book was better, but we had a ton of fun talking about movie adaptions and their ups and downs.

Don’t worry, Laura and Andrew are  still friends. Laura bought him lunch after the debate was over. There were rumblings of a possible rematch for this summer when the final Potter movie comes out. As we said last week, “Personally we still think that the two coolest werewolves of all time are Jacob Black and Remus Lupin. On their downtime they discuss their problems with vampires and Death Eaters while sharing a butter beer and watching the sunset at La Push.”

After you watch the debate tell us what you think in our comments and over on Moviefone.

Alex Meraz on Hell’s Kitchen

Alex was one of the folks dining in the Hell’s Kitchen restaurant this week.  He is at roughly the 29.40 mark. Other celebrity diners included soccer champ Mia Hamm and MLB star Nomar Garciaparra. You can find the episode online for the next 60 days or so here. TY to MellyBelly626 on Twitter
