Congratulations to Chris Weitz and Demian Birchir on SAG Nomination

The nominations for the annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were just announced. Along with The Golden Globe Awards they are considered to be a OSCAR predictor. Demian Birchir who starred in New Moon director Chris Weitz’s first post Twilight outing, A A Better Life. was nominated as Outstanding Actor. This is quite a feat for a low budget, indie film starring a relatively unknown actor of Mexican descent. Suffice it to say, it was on almost no critic’s predication list.

According to the LA Times:

Demián Bichir, a 48-year-old Mexican actor little-known to American moviegoers, scored a surprise best actor nomination at the SAG Awards on Wednesday morning.

Bichir, who plays an illegal immigrant pursuing the American dream in “A Better Life,” beat out a couple of projected favorites in the category, including “Shame’s” Michael Fassbender and Gary Oldman from “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Directed by Chris Weitz, “A Better Life” has only grossed $1.8 million at the U.S. box office.

The foreign star was only one of a handful of actors to receive a nomination who had not graced the lists of awards prognosticators. In the lead actress category, nearly all of the nominees were considered shoo-ins, namely Meryl Streep for “The Iron Lady” and Michelle Williams from “My Week with Marilyn,” though it was slightly unexpected that Glenn Close earned a nod for her cross-dressing turn in “Albert Nobbs.”

He is up against stiff competition including perennial favorites George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio among others.

MTV: How to Spend Time Until Breaking Dawn Part 2

MtvlogoKara Warner over at MTV tweeted out a question yesterday: “How are you passing the time from now until November 16, 2012? BD2 release”

We responded along with lots of others.

Our friends at Twilight Lexicon offered a shout-out to Internet stars/comedic sister duo Hannah and Hilly Hindi’s “The Hillywood Show,” who recently reached their goal of raising $10,000 to produce a “Breaking Dawn” parody. “Looking forward to the @HillywoodShow Breaking Dawn parody. They raised 10K to do it,” the Lexicon tweeted.

Others suggested re-watching “Twilight,” “New Moon” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” and re-reading Stephenie Meyer’s books that inspired it all.

“@Twilight movie marathons, re-reading the books for my 6th time and of course twitter :),” wrote Jimena Martinez.

Sarah M., who is one of the lovely ladies behind the Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard Facebook page, seems to be developing a budget so she can come to Los Angeles next year for the premiere and camp out again in Tent City.

“Work, work, work to save $ for Tent City 2012 and hoping for some #SWATH promos/premieres w/ Kristen & @KStewsHBG :),” Sarah tweeted, referring to Stewart’s other big movie, “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

Check out more suggestions over at MTV. What are you doing?

Peter Facinelli Loves Hong Kong

Imagine if you had to wait to see Breaking dawn in your country until December 22nd! Well that’s exactly what it’s like for fans who live in Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand. Peter Facinelli went overseas to meet with fans and press.

According to the Wall Street Journal:

Actor Peter Facinelli, who stars as Dr. Carlisle Cullen, met with journalists at a news conference in Hong Kong Tuesday, and offered an attempt at a Cantonese greeting: “lei ho,” or hello. The 38-year-old New Yorker, who plays the vampire patriarch of the Cullen clan, said he was thrilled to be visiting the city for the first time and had already scoped out tourist attractions like the Peak and Victoria Harbour’s evening laser show.

He was so taken with Hong Kong that he wants to make a movie in the city, he said. “I’m going to write [a script], and I’m coming back to film it.”

We’ll be looking forward to coverage from our friends at Twilight Singapore, Twilight Nusantara (Indonesian site) , Twilight Philippines

Booboo Stewart puts up a brief movie shot in his home where he talks about loving his guitar and how he got into music.

James Franco Sounds Off on Breaking Dawn

We knew it was coming sooner or later. James Fraco spent the better part of 2010 and early 2011 making obscure Twilight references, and even made a pitch to be in the movie, and now he’s commenting on it.

Check out his thoughts on Breaking Dawn and the Descendants in Paris Review:

Death comes pretty simply in the latest installment of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series, too: the conceit allows the filmmakers to get away with murder, literally. Meyers has set her vampire story in adolescence (never mind that Edward is more than a hundred years old and could probably be Bella’s great-great-grandfather), and the constraints and abilities of the vampires become a metaphor for the emotional chaos of high school. In the first “Twilight” installment, Edward can’t kiss Bella because he is afraid that he will get so excited he’ll loose[SIC] control of himself and suck her blood; for them, sex is tantamount to death. Not that this sense of decorum prevents Edward from killing evil vampires, or nearly murdering a group of young men whose rape-fixated thoughts he can psychically overhear. Edward has murdered, and in Breaking Dawn we learn that he has murdered lots.

Of course, a few other forbidden territories are broken in as well. The protagonists finally marry, having waited until the wise old age of eighteen, and since the book and the film dutifully show them being wed, they are then allowed to fuck each others’ brains out. For a film that claims to be sexually responsible, the “Twilight” movies are awfully dependent on teenage sex to attract viewers. The actors prance about like pieces of meat, their disturbingly developed bodies on full display; Taylor Lautner’s rippling teenage chest is just a little better than the child beauty-pageant stars at the end of Little Miss Sunshine. The fans have divided themselves into teams (Team Jacob and Team Edward) and, considering that they already know the outcome of the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob, the choice of a team can mean little more than—well, you can imagine.

Not that sex leads to anything splendid when it finally does happen: Bella (spoiler alert!) becomes pregnant with a vampire that apparently develops to birth size within weeks, requires her to drink blood, and is eating her from the inside. This terrifying picture of pregnancy culminates with Bella’s rival lovers giving her a C-section, as if they are playing some perverse adolescent game of doctor.

Motherhood is the fall guy in The Descendants, too. It’s revealed early on that the daughter hates her mother because she caught her mother cheating; it is the daughter, in fact, who reveals the affair to her father and aids in the hunt for the other man. The mother remains comatose, and the movie suggests that the adulteress got what she deserved. Not even her lover, when he finally surfaces, loves her.

Bella initially fares little better; despite the boys’ best efforts, she dies in childbirth. But not to worry! She can be saved by being turned into a vampire, a recourse not available to most teen moms. But then again, those “Twilight” creators know how to get their blood—and eat it, too.

One would have hoped that the Yale MFA program would have afforded him the opportunity to discern the difference between lose and loose…alas, no.

Get a Scorecard Folks: Round Three of Who is Trying to Buy Summit Entertainment

OK, so first there were rumblings of a Lionsgate and Summit merger. There there was Miramax getting in on the act with their vast movie library. And now the story I had to read twice to make sure I understood it…Summit (at least two of the three owners) may try and buy itself…oh to be a fly on that lunchroom wall.

According to the LA Times:

As “Twilight” studio Summit Entertainment is immersed in negotiations with multiple parties to get acquired before the end of the year, a new bidder may have emerged: Summit itself.

Co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger are putting together a management buyout plan in partnership with a private equity fund to take financial control of Summit, according to a person familiar with the matter but not authorized to speak publicly.

The plan would involve Friedman and Wachsberger buying out their current investors, which include private equity firm Rizvi Traverse Management and film financing and production company Participant Media. It would leave the two chiefs of Santa Monica-based Summit in control, as opposed to other proposals currently on the table that would merge the independent studio with Lions Gate Entertainment or Miramax Films.

As we’ve said before, we haven’t a clue in the world what all of this is going to mean in the long run other than to say it’s going to make life really interesting around here for the next 16 months or so!

Mr Sulu Declares Twilight Common Enemy of Star Wars and Star Trek

The whole thing here is obviously very-tongue-in-cheek.

I tried to be good….I tried to take the high road…I really did…but there are too many non-PG-13 Star Trek jokes going on in my head coupled with Star Trek behind the scenes lore that is legendary…firing this photon torpedo back: Poor Sulu, this is what happens when warp factor 10 only happens with a double dose of bran flakes followed by a viagra chaser. 🙂

Round Three Vote For Kristen Stewart!

E! will be donating $25,000 to the charity of the choice of whoever their celebrity of the year is. Twilight Lexicon Interview: Amadou Ly Talks French Coven and Hints at Surprises in Breaking Dawn Part 2

Lori Joffs had the chance to talk with Amadou Ly in a phone interview about a week ago. After she introduced herself, she  explained that she was part of the interview team (Twilight Series Theories, Twilight Examiner, and Twilight Facebook) that got him and Janelle Froehlich to talk about a few things that were maybe a bit of a secret still. You can watch the video of this interview as well as the one we did with Melissa Rosenberg for more information about the French Coven.

Twilight Lexicon: Let me tell you what happened. We had heard about the French coven and I hadn’t really put a lot of thought into it. Then when I saw you, it clicked in my mind that you have a striking resemblance to Edi Gathegi. That’s where the whole conversation came from. Have you met Edi Gathegi?

Amadou: Yes, I met him that night at the premiere actually. He was a really nice guy and I told him how much I admire his work.

Twilight Lexicon: The interview we did with you – and when we spoke to Melissa Rosenberg she mentioned some stuff about the French coven – I have to tell you that it has been stirring up quite a bit of conversation in the fandom. How does that make you feel?

Amadou: When the made the announcement of the new French coven, it little went from like zero to sky rocket. Then three days later you have the Spectrum stating that I’m one of the French vampires to watch out for. It’s definitely a great feeling and I’m really grateful to see the positive reaction so far. And I really think [fans] are going to love it – they’re going to love the French vampires simply because there’s going to be something new for the fans to see. And we’re also speaking French in the film.

Twilight Lexicon: How much of your dialogue is in French?

Amadou: I don’t know. You might have to wait and see!

Twilight Lexicon: There are a few fans who have commented on our website who are worried that by adding a coven we are going to lose some parts that were in the book originally. How would you respond to them?

Amadou: Melissa Rosenberg and Stephenie Meyer actually added a bonus coven for the fans. I think once [the fans] give it a chance and take a look at what’s being revealed by adding the new French coven, I think they’ll totally be happy with the addition of the new coven. So far what I’ve read has been positive and I’m glad [fans] are embracing it the way they are at the moment.

Twilight Lexicon: Your personal story is so unique and you’ve been sharing touches of your own personal story in various interviews. You’re from Senegal.

Amadou: Yes.

Twilight Lexicon: When did you first come to the United States?

Amadou: I came to the US on Sept. 10, 2001.

Twilight Lexicon: And then you became a student in search of a visa.

Amadou: I was undocumented for a few years and then I received my F1 visa and my green card.

Twilight Lexicon: But yet through all of your struggles you’ve ended up in this major franchise kind of living a dream life!

Amadou: Totally! From being in Senegal to overcoming all those obstacles that were in my way and then growing up in Harlem and living on my own since I was 14 then dealing with immigration at 18 to the point where I was pretty close to being deported – yes! At the moment I can happily say I am totally living a dream life!

Twilight Lexicon: Do you see yourself as a source of inspiration to young people? I mean, so many kids now a days are giving up way too soon on life and their dreams. What kind of advice would you give to them about not giving up?

Amadou: When I was a kid growing up in Harlem I was circled by a lot of negativity. I learned a lot of great things, but the truth is, I was circled by a lot of negativity whether it was gang members or drug dealers or killers. Therefore, what I did was I found voices that spoke to me or spoke to my soul. Those voices were from Sydney Poitier or Oprah Winfrey, and at the same time reading different type of books from The Alchemist to Tuesday’s with Morrie to make me appreciate life more and understand that there is going to be struggle in life, struggles are here to be overcame. Once I learned that there’s going to be struggles everywhere you go, it just made things easier. As a matter of fact, it made me become more excited for more struggles. I don’t know if that sounds right to you?

Twilight Lexicon: That sounds exactly right. That you’re excited to see what you can learn and how you can grow in the future.

Amadou: Exactly. Throughout the years I’ve developed a mechanism where we can’t let the small things bother you, but at the same time, we’re all human. We still go through struggles every day.

Twilight Lexicon: You said in one of the interviews that I read that Effie in Dreamgirls was one of your personal inspirations.

Amadou: Totally. I remember in 2006 when I was watching Dreamgirls. Looking at the character Effie and how much she wanted to pursue her dreams yet there’s this huge speed bump. Just looking at everything that she had to go through. Literally it told me to keep going and that it is more than possible. So watching Bill Condon direct in that film and then having the opportunity to work with Bill Condon in Twilight at this stage – it’s a dream that came true!

Twilight Lexicon: Almost like a full circle moment.

Amadou: Yes. Totally. I even told them this at the premiere. I’ve been living a dream and I think some of the people just question how much I smile or how I laugh a lot. It’s because I’m living a dream! They have no idea!

Twilight Lexicon: You do! You smile from ear to ear. When people were asking me about what was memorable [from the premiere], I mentioned you and how huge your smile was.

Amadou: Thank you! I believe in positivity. I believe in great energy. And I believe that we are all one. Therefore, do your part and smile and you never know – that smile may make someone else’s day.

Twilight Lexicon: We always ask in interviews if you have any upcoming projects that they want the fandom to know about because – as I hope you will learn about the Twilight fandom is that we like to follow actors in other things that they do! SO what upcoming projects do you have?

Amadou: I’m working with director Jessica Goldberg on a project where I’m playing an immigrant whose story is pretty close to my personal life story. So you should totally look out for that. But at the moment we are in the early stages. I’m also writing a pilot that I’m working on and I think that’s going to be amazing. [Fans] can follow my on twitter @AmadouLy where I will keep them updated on every single thing that I’m working on. So far the fans have been lovely and very supportive. I’ve very grateful to have their presence.

Twilight Lexicon: Is there anything else you’d like to say to the fans?

Amadou: Thank you for making Breaking Dawn Part 1 number one in the world. (Note: At the time of the interview, the film was in I’s 2nd week at number 1.) It is mind blowing how they have supported Breaking Dawn 1. However, Breaking Dawn 2 is coming! It is the final. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you scared. After all, it is the end of Twilight and Twilight is a generation. You will have to go and watch Breaking Dawn 2, because generations will go by and everyone will look back and they’ll talk about Breaking Dawn 2.

Twilight Lexicon They’ll say, “Where were you when?”

Amadou: Exactly! Everyone will look back and say, “Do you remember this scene? Do you remember the fight scene? Do you remember other scenes?” And trust me, you will want to remember it because you will want to remember the momentum and the energy. Bill Condon did such an amazing job. And you have the new French coven to watch out for! And there’s a lot of other surprises! Who knows – there might be a twist coming around your way!

Twilight Lexicon: Well, we are excited for it! Thank you so much for talking with me.

Amadou: Thank you so much. I enjoyed this, and I also enjoyed the other one! (Meaning the red carpet interview.)
