Mitt Romney Twilight Fan?

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Potential US Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was on the Today Show this morning. After the interview covered his political aspirations, the reporter started asking what you could call human interest questions like “Do you have an IPod and what’s on it?” Then the conversation turned to recent books he’s read, and you guessed it, Twilight was mentioned. The commentary starts at the 5:50 mark or so.

*As a personal favor to the Lex staff, can we keep the discussion limited to Romney’s book comments rather than his political theories. We asked the same favor when the president announced his daughters were reading the books.*

Twilight and the Enduring Draw of YA Fiction

The Atlantic has just launched a four-part series on the rise of YA fiction over the last decade. In today’s installment they talk about the impact of Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Ender’s Game on the genre.

“In a world of niche marketing, mass entertainment phenomena are rarer and rarer. But in the last decade, fans of all ages have flocked repeatedly to series aimed at young adults. Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy may be popular, but Lisbeth Salander can’t hold a candle to Harry Potter: The traumatized Scandanavian hacker’s sold 27 million novels to the British boy wizard’s 400 million. Bella Swan, the moody teen who takes up with a vampire, has propelled Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series to 116 million book sales. Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy hasn’t quite broken into that upper echelon, but the movie adaptation has attracted such buzz that it’s finally propelled forward a long-stalled film version of Orson Scott Card’s 1985 YA science-fiction classic Ender’s Game. Marie Lu’s novel Legend hasn’t even been published yet, but the producers behind the Twilight movie adaptations are already shepherding it towards the big screen.”

Catherine Hardwicke Stays Nuetral on the Best Kiss Debate

catherinehardwickeAt this year’s MTV Movie Awards Eclipse is competing against itself in two categories, one of them being Best Kiss. The specific two kisses that are nominated are the ones between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the meadow and the one between Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner on the mountain top. Catherine Hardwicke chimed in on which way she thinks the vote might go.

“Maybe it can be a tie? That would be perfect! I think [that’s] the safest solution to this problem,” she laughed.

Check out what else Catherine had to say about Twilight and her Red Riding Hood experience on MTV.

A tie in this situation wouldn’t be bad; however, worse would be a split vote allowing another film to take away the prize and preventing a Twilight threepeat!  Vote and vote daily at MTV.

Next Movie Summarizes the Best Movie Nominees for the 2011 MTV Movie Awards

Eclipse will probably pull this one out in our opinion. The strongest competition comes from the Harry Potter franchise, so it’s important to keep voting! Here’s what Next Movie had to say about Eclipse:

“Eclipse” earned $700 million at the worldwide box office, yet was ignored by the Oscars. Fie on you, Academy! Fie! Granted, Twi-Hards would probably have loved this movie no matter how good it was; but fortunately it was good, with thrilling fight scenes, comedic moments, two swoon-worthy romances and plenty to keep fans of both Team Edward and Team Jacob happy. (We don’t know about you, but we always sleep half-naked when we go camping.) The bar’s been set. Your move, “Breaking Dawn.”

Elizabeth Reaser and Bryce Dallas Howard to Chat With Josh Horowitz

According to MTV they have too much material that they want to preview to put into the MTV Movie Awards. So they are going to do something new calling it the MTV Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. Here are the details:

“Starting on Monday, May 30, and running through Friday, June 3, we’ll be bringing you exclusive looks at some of this summer’s hottest films, including “Fright Night,” “Horrible Bosses” and more. Each night at 11 p.m. ET, we’ll welcome a film’s cast onto MTV to present an exclusive clip. Then you can continue the live conversation with the stars online, as our own Josh Horowitz hosts an extended chat with the talent. As always, you’ll have the chance to ask the stars your own questions; just tweet at @MTVNews using the hashtag #SPW.”

Tuesday Night: the stars and director of “The Art of Getting By,” a Sundance fave earlier this year, will be stopping by. Emma Roberts, Michael Angarano, Elizabeth Reaser and director Gavin Wiesen will introduce a clip, then stick around to discuss their indie about a lonely student (Freddie Highmore) and the unlikely friendship he strikes up with Roberts’ charismatic and complicated teen girl.

Thursday Night: Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard will jump into the action in support of “The Help.” Based on the #1 New York Times best-seller, the film stars Stone as an unlikely civil-rights activist in ’60s-era Mississippi.”

You can see Elizabeth Reaser at the 1:35 mark in the trailer for The Art of Getting By.

Next Movie Profiles Xavier Samuel and Other Breakout Nominees

Next Movie has the rundown on each of the nominees for Best Breakout Star for the MTV Movie Awards:

“As if there weren’t already enough hotness in the “Twilight” series, in “Eclipse” we got Australian actor Xavier Samuel as Riley Biers, the young man who is attacked and turned by Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) into a vampire to lead the newborn army against our pals the Cullens. Who IS that guy?! the Twi-Hards asked when the first movie stills showed Riley leading the villainous vampires out of the water, his eyes (among other things) smoldering; and now that they know, poor Xavier’s life will probably never be the same again.”

See more at MTV, and don’t forget to vote for Xavier!
