Time: The Harsh Bigotry of Twilight Haters, Erica Christakis Speaks Out

This is hands down one of the best statements on media attitudes towards Twilight. It’s written by a PhD and a Harvard college administrator. Here’s one of the best parts:

The negative reactions fall in two camps: The dismissive camp simply mocks Twilight’s incorporation of silly, “moony” elements like undying love and the surprisingly authentic portrayal of wedding ritual, honeymoon jitters and the shock of unintended pregnancy; the topics are apparently too boring and unrelatable for most reviewers. The deluded camp, conversely, takes Twilight far too seriously, faulting it for leading young girls to mistake fantasy for reality in dangerous, disempowering ways.

It makes you wonder if some people missed the memo that hundreds of millions of females, like their male counterparts, enjoy their fantasy life straight-up weird, sexy, and implausible.

Why is it that female fantasies are such a source of derision and fear? The male species is allowed all manner of violent, creepy, ludicrous and degrading movie tropes, and while we may not embrace them as high art, no one questions them seriously as entertainment, even when sometimes we probably should. (Violent imagery is, after all, associated with violent behavior.) You want to saw someone in half or put their head in a vice? Showcase naked strippers as a fake plot device? Pair a beautiful and successful career woman with a slovenly, unemployed man? Pretend you are Wolverine? Go right ahead. We know you can’t really be serious. But watch a tender wedding night between a virginal, undead superhero and his teenage, human bride, and the scolds come out in force. Are parents worried that their teenage daughter actually wants to be impregnated by a 100-year-old vampire who can crush a headboard with his hands (and perform an emergency C-section with his teeth)?

If you read nothing else today, read the entire thing on Time

So why in our opinion don’t more speak out? A lot of us are so used to the “But Twilight Will Turn You Into a Mindless and Submissive Drone” speech that we are immune to it. We hold successful jobs and furthermore hold our own w/our male counterparts. The proof of it not indoctrinating us is in our daily lives and we laugh at those trying so very hard to save us from ourselves. There’s something pretty hilarious about people so hell bent on trying to save us from the delusion of our thinking on escapist fantasy. We’ve got enough real-life issues to worry about rather than argue with those that just don’t get it. We’ve spoken with our book and box office dollars. We’ve heard the critics, we’ve comprehended their points, we just don’t agree…and THAT my friends drives them nuts. In short this adage sums it up, “Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.”

Mark Kermode: A Guy Who Gets It, Reviews Breaking Dawn

We have been covering Mark Kermode’s assessment of the Twilight Saga since New Moon. Mark Kermode is well aware the series (like we are ) isn’t in danger of winning an OSCAR, but understands it’s escapist, romantic fun. He is also highly critical of reviewers who seem to think it’s a treatise on abstinence, a Mormon conversion piece, or a defense of abusive male behavior. Check out Mark’s latest and scroll down for links on his previous reviews.

Meg Tingley: The Editor Who Discovered Twilight Speaks Out

Meg Tingley is about to celebrate her 25th anniversary at Little Brown, the company that publishes The Twilight Saga novels and companion books. She talks to Big Think’s Pub Crawl Blog about what her instinct was when Twilight came across her desk and why she is proud of the series.

Pub Crawl: When you first read it, did you know that Twilight would end up being what it is today? Why did you pick this book when others had turned it down?

Megan Tingley: Did I ever imagine that girls would be screaming and crying at Stephenie’s book signings, or women would be naming their baby daughters Isabella, or that Twilight would propel an explosion in paranormal literature? Of course not! That said, I did have a distinct feeling when I read it—my heart was racing and my mind was reeling. The scenes came alive for me in a such a way that I felt I was right in the action with the characters. And I could see it as a book immediately. In fact, the text excerpt that appears on the back of Twilight is a passage I circled on the original manuscript while I was reading it for the first time on the plane—before I had even bought it. So, there was never any doubt or hesitation on my part that the first novel would be successful, but obviously I couldn’t have predicted the extent of that success.

PC: When it comes to books for young readers, are there other forms of success besides NY Times Bestsellers and blockbuster movies?

MT: Bestsellers and movies are exciting but to me success is more about creating an enduring work. The idea that people will still be reading and loving some of the books I have published many, many years from now is deeply gratifying. With Twilight, the thing I am proudest of is that this series instilled a passionate love of reading in so many young people. So many teens have said Twilight was the first book they loved reading and we get letters from parents thanking us for getting their kids reading and writing. Stephenie is an inspiring role model and it is so great to see kids idolize a writer alongside the usual rock bands, sports stars, and celebrities.

Breaking Dawn Scenes That Didn’t Make The Movie

It happens in every film. The creative team has to get together a teaser months ahead of time. The footage they use may or may not make the final cut due to timing, pacing, any number of things. The Twilight films are no stranger to this. Remember in the first film where Emmett says “She’s not one of us” in the teaser, but it never made it to the final version of the film? Well here is what we’ve spotted in regards to Breaking Dawn part 1.

First let’s take a look at the teaser that aired during the MTV Movie Awards back in early June.

The first 20 seconds or so with the girl in the red dress (Olga Fonda?) in front of the Volturi is an entire scene that never makes it into the movie. Later on in the teaser we see Charlie Bewley throwing the same girl at a wall (see screen cap below roughly the 1:22 mark) To clarify because there is obvious a lot of confusion in our comments and on Twitter: 100% certain that there are 2 Volturi scenes one of which was cut: Girl in the teaser is a brunette with her hair up in a red dress who Charlie Bewley then chucks at a wall. In the actual movie it’s a blonde with her hair down in a black dress that Charlie Bewley and Dan Cudmore just drag off.

Next up is a minor one. The footage in the teaser doesn’t match the brief scene on the screen. Rob and Kristen certainly still dance in the Lapa section of Rio, only it’s not the camera angle seen here in the teaser ( see cap below)

Now speaking of walls, Robert Pattinson throws Taylor Lautner at the wall in the teaser (roughly the 1:28 mark) knocking a painting off the wall in the process. It doesn’t make it to the big screen (see screen cap).

Now aside from the trailer there is the area of still photography. This gets tricky. Sometimes they take a shot in costume just because it looks pretty and will make a good magazine cover. Other times it’s an actual onscreen moment. In looking at the stills and PR shots it’s pretty obvious that the ones of the boat and Kristen Stewart’s arm in the feathers were just of the “looks pretty” type. However, it certainly seems like the ones below have high potential as cutting room floor items.

What’s your take are there any moments that we missed? Are you hoping these items end up on the DVD?
