Forever in Forks and Stephenie Meyer Day 2013

forks signWe’ve had some questions come in about the difference between  Stephenie Meyer Day and Forever in Forks and figured we should just post it here in the open to avoid further questions.  Stephenie Meyer Day as well as Forever in Forks will be held in Forks, WA Sept. 12 – 15, 2013.  The two events are separate and each have their own schedule of things to do while in Forks.  They are working together on some aspects, such as a fund raising event for Stand Up To Cancer.  They have different events going on each day including a prom, a birthday celebration for Bella, a costume contest, movie showings, and a scavenger hunt.  Forever In Forks is offering two ticket packages right now for their events, but space is limited.  Stephenie Meyer Day requires tickets to certain events but not for everything.  Each guest is responsible for their own travel and lodging.  Hotels are sometimes hard to come by at these events, so if you want to go, start looking now!  Forever in Forks does have a “find a rommie” option if you are hoping to cut down on your cost.

BuzzFeed Says Dating A Vampire Would be Awful – Agree or Disagree?

We were given the heads up that BuzzFeed has a current tongue in cheek post about dating vampires.  (Warning, there is some bad language on the BuzzFeed post) They say that dating just about any other supernatural creature would be better than dating a vampire, and they give a list of reasons.  Such as:

Swamp thing absorbs sunlight rather than catching on fire and dying immediately.

Edward Sparkle

Or doing this.

So do you agree?  Lets hear it!  Why would a vampire make a good boyfriend/girlfriend?  Or why WOULDN’T a vampire make a good boyfriend/girlfriend?  Which supernatural creature would be better to date and why?

Life after Twilight: The Books

twilight-booksNow that the Twilight Saga has pretty much come to an end, the fandom is left with one big questions: what do we do now?

Over the next few weeks we will take a look at what you in the fandom are doing with your life after Twilight.  We will take polls on various topics and are always open to your comments and suggestions.  We will cover the films, the actors, and the fans in general.  This week we will focus on the books.  We want to know how often , if ever, you still pick up your books and read them. Take our poll and then leave us a comment on why you selected your answer.

Art Project Says “Thank You” to Stephenie Meyer

Power_Authors_Stephenie_MeyerThe folks hosting the annual Stephenie Meyer Day in Forks have organized a project to provide fans with a way to say “Thank You!” to their favorite author.  Here are the official details:

Stephenie Meyer Day is a celebration of all things Twilight and a way to say ‘thank you’ to Stephenie Meyer for her amazing contribution to literature!  Her stories introduced us to a world we never knew existed. Hidden away in the beautiful Olympic Peninsula is the small town of Forks, Washington, shrouded in an almost constant cover of clouds.  It is here that we will gather from September 12-15to celebrate our love of Twilight, the fandom we’ve grown to love, and the friends we’ve met along the way.

Stephenie Meyer Day and the Olympic Coven would like to ask you to join us in saying ‘thank you’ to the incomparable Stephenie Meyer. Write a letter, draw a picture, print out your pictures from Twilight events, etc. to show your appreciation.  Submissions must be on a standard sheet of paper (8 ½ by 11) and no more than three pages long.  If your submission is any longer or on any other size paper, we cannot guarantee it will be included.  Submissions must be received by August 31, 2013.  Please submit your “thanks” to:

Stephenie Meyer Day
PO Box 1268
Loganville, Georgia
30052

We will compile all the submissions into a scrapbook (or two) and add a little love from Forks over Stephenie Meyer Day Weekend. We will then send our books to Stephenie Meyer herself!  You do not have to be attending to participate; you just have to love Twilight! We look forward to seeing your submissions, Twihards, and thank you from all of us!

Brit Politician Says Teens Should Read Middlemarch, not Twilight

Michael GroveMichael Grove, a member of the British Parliament and The secretary of State for Education, gave a speech at Brighton College last week where he open bashed the idea of teens reading Twilight.

“Too many children are only too happy to lose themselves in Stephenie Meyer.”

“There is a Great Tradition of English Literature, a Canon of transcendent works, & Breaking Dawn is not part of it,” he continued.

Then in an interview with Financial Times he added,

“You come home to find your 17-year-old daughter engrossed in a book. Which would delight you more… Twilight or Middlemarch?,”

But wait! It isn’t just Twilight that this political Brit has a problem with. He also thinks Angry Birds and pool are a waste of time.

“You see your son is totally absorbed, hunched over the family laptop,” Gove said. “You steal a look over his shoulder – and what would please you more – to see him playing Angry Birds, or coding?,” Politics.co.uk reported. “Your son says he wants to spend more time with one particular group of friends. Which would be more inspiring – because he wants to improve his pool or because they’re in the cadets and he wants to join?”

As one twitter user put it: “Brave” speech from Michael Grove today. Coming out against Twilight, Angry Birds, and playing pool. Basically everything young people like.

Personally, I’ve seen many a teen who hates to read say they are thankful for Twilight because it opened up a world of books for them. I’d rather my kid read Twilight than not read at all! No Twilight fan has ever tried to pass off the saga as Pulitzer Prize winning material, but it is fun and entertaining. If we were only suppose to expose ourselves to award winning, educational, and deep material, we wouldn’t have movies like Airplane, Blazing Saddles, or Napoleon Dynamite. TV would have to lose Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother. I don’t think this man understands that his definition of “fun” doesn’t fit with a vast majority of people’s opinions.

Defending The Twilight Saga

moviefone-logo-195x68For the Summer Sequel Smack Down being hosted at Moviefone, I was asked to offer my opinions as to way the varies films in the Twilight Saga were better than the other films they were matched up against.  All for match ups are featured at HuffPost.  Here is what I wrote for Breaking Dawn Part 1 vrs Deathly Hallows Part 1:

Potter verses Twilight. How many times has this been debated? I’m a fan of both, so it’s hard to pick one franchise. However, this debate isn’t about the franchise as a whole; it’s about these two specific films. In this case, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 wins over Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. I could debate this comically, and break down how Bella and Edward’s wedding was leaps and bounds better than Bill and Fluer’s. I could joke about how the only real “romance” we got in Deathly Hallows was when Horcurx!Harry made out with Horcrux!Hermione, while we got full-on, headboard-breaking sex in Breaking Dawn Part 1. But I really do thinkBreaking Dawn Part 1 deserves legitimate consideration this time. What makes Breaking Dawn Part 1 so special as a film is that it literally hits on every major point in a young woman’s life when it comes to relationships: Marriage, making love for the first time, becoming pregnant, and delivering the child. The film even goes a step further in having Bella fight for the life of her unborn child at the risk of her own life, something rarely seen in Hollywood. It’s a female-driven storyline about the most life-changing events that happen for a female, and it’s aimed at a female fanbase. I think it was an important film for that very reason. I can’t deny that Deathly Hallows Part 1 didn’t move me when Ron left or when Dobby died. Sure it did. But watching Bella literally waste away and eventually die was so much more chilling on screen than it was the book. The birth scene alone should have granted the film an “R” rating, and yet Bill Condon managed to pull it off in a way that worked to keep the film at its PG-13 status. And then came the ending! Oh, what an ending! Splitting up a large book into two movies always makes fans wonder where the first film will end. I was highly displeased and a bit confused with the choice of where Deathly Hallows Part 1 ended, but Breaking Dawn Part 1 had the perfect ending. So, this round goes to the Breaking Dawn Part 1.

Read the rest of the match ups at HuffPost and let me know if I missed any very important points!  If any of the Twilight films wins their round, I will have to write more on why they should win in round 2.  I am open to suggestions and want to form the best arguments possible!

Also, don’t forget to vote for the Twilight Saga at the Summer Sequel Smackdown!
