A Newbie’s Thoughts on Breaking Dawn—Hilarious Must Read

What would happen if you were sent to cover Breaking Dawn part 2 and knew nothing at all about the books and films?

I first learned about Twilight four years ago, when a former employer at a talent agency handed me a note that read “Twilight Stephenie Meyer” and instructed me to pick it up at a local bookstore. After walking into the store, I handed this piece of paper to the first employee I could find. I said: “Do you guys have a book called Twilight?” and “It’s by or about someone named Stephenie Meyer.” The employee just laughed and pointed over my shoulder to a six-foot-tall display for the book series. Possibly out of resentment, I remained willfully ignorant of the series ever since. I have gleaned this and only this info in the years since: There is someone named Jacob and someone named Edward. One is a vampire and one is a werewolf, not sure which is which. One is played by Taylor Lautner and one is played by Robert Pattinson (whose last name I recently learned was not Paterson). I also haven’t seen either in any other movies, other than T-Laut’s appearance in Valentine’s Day (appearing with his then-girlfriend Taylor Swift — I know that). Also, Kristen Stewart is in the movies. I don’t know her character’s name or if she is a human or vampire or werewolf. That is all I knew when I was assigned to go see a screening of Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and told to write down my confused thoughts and questions as I watched. Here are my notes, chronologically. (Spoilers follow. But if you, like me, are clueless about Twilight, they won’t ruin your day.)

Read his actual reactions on Vulture, they are HILARIOUS! TY to Joel for sending this in.

Breaking Dawn Makes EW’s Best of 2012 Behind the Scenes

Melissa Rosenberg talks about the battle scene specifics as part of EW’s Behind the Scenes series

I always write out battle scenes, not because I think that they’re going to shoot the action sequences as I write them, but because we need to know who dies when, why they die, how they die, who kills them, what is the emotion of the moment. Ultimately it lands with the director and the stunt coordinator; I took it as far as I could on the page.

The way I approached it was, who would be the most shocking to kill? Because the first death initiates the battle, it has to be someone who everybody cares about. And because they’re all there for Carlisle, it made sense that he was the one. Well, actually, the first one who is killed in reality is Irina. But the whole company doesn’t actually know her — Carlisle, they’ll go to battle for. And you also want, like, who’s going to be the most satisfying to kill? Who have been the various nemeses? So everyone kind of gets a moment. Of course, Bella and Edward had to be the ones to kill Aro. That was the ultimate, and that they do it together felt really right. I really wanted to see Bella just rip his frickin’ head off. [Laughs]

Breaking Dawn Still Clobbering at the Box Office Set Overseas record

According to Box Office Mojo

With two new nationwide releases—Killing Them Softly and The Collection—failing to make any noise at the box office, the post-Thanksgiving weekend lived up its reputation as a dumping ground. As a result, for the third-straight weekend the top three movies were The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Skyfall and Lincoln. On the strength of those holdovers, the Top 12 earned an estimated $107.5 million, which is up a whopping 46 percent from the same frame last year.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 three-peated with an estimated $17.4 million (off 60 percent). The fifth and final Twilight movie continues to hang on slightly better than its predecessors, and with a $254.6 million total it’s now within $1 million of catching up to New Moon.

Also we seem to have set an overseas record

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 once again led the foreign box office this weekend, and has already become the highest-grossing Twilight movie ever overseas. Meanwhile, Rise of the Guardians expanded in to most overseas markets and performed decently, while Skyfall continued its steady march towards $1 billion worldwide.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 added an estimated $48.8 million this weekend for a new foreign total of $447.8 million. That tops Breaking Dawn Part 1’s franchise record of $430.9 million; with a few major markets like Japan and China still on the horizon, the fifth and final Twilight movie is guaranteed to close with over $500 million overseas. One interesting note: the movie’s top market is the U.K. with $49.9 million, while its second-best territory is actually Brazil with $41.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has earned $702.4 million.

Verified @dakotafanning and @ellefanning accounts on Twitter are fakes

In a piece of very alarming news, the Dakota Fanning Twitter account that Twitter confirmed as verified and we reported on as such has proven to be a fake.

We want to personally thank several fans who alerted us to bizarre Tweets and DM’s that came from the account and then were deleted before we became aware of it. We were able to contact Summit Entertainment who in turn contacted Dakota’s reps and they verified that the account is a fake. Those fake tweets and DM’s will be forwarded to Dakota’s legal team.

At this time we have no idea what the end game here was. The account was mostly talking about a charitable event, it’s unknown if this charity on top of Twitter was fooled too. Regardless, it’s disturbing to say the very least!

We deeply regret reporting about this fake account and would just like to remind fans that the four biggest names in the Twilight Saga: Rob, Kristen, Stephenie, and Taylor do not have Twitter. In fact none except Taylor who has a facebook that he hasn’t updated in over a year, has any kind of social media.

Austenland To Make Its Debut at Sundance

Stephenie Meyer’s Fickle Fish Films Production Company’s first film, Austenland, will be making its debut at Sundance in the US Dramatic category. You can find it listed here on the Sundance site. The festival this year is notable because, according to the AP:

The Sundance Film Festival has an apparent record lineup of female directors competing for its top honor this January.

Half the entries _ eight of the 16 films _ announced Wednesday in the festival’s U.S. dramatic competition were directed by women for the next installment of Robert Redford’s independent-cinema showcase, which runs Jan. 17-27 in Park City, Utah.

Going back to 1992, the best showing previously for female filmmakers was in 2000, when six of the 16 U.S. dramatic contenders were directed by women.

Sundance organizers were still trolling back to the early years of the festival’s 33-year history, but this January’s eight competition films appears to be most ever from women and the first time the entries have been evenly split between female and male directors.

The film was shot back in the summer of 2011 and is based on the Shannon Hale novel of the same name.

Christina Perri Cracks Billboard’s Hot 100 With 1,000 years Part 2

According to Billboard:

Perri is back on the Hot 100 with “A Thousand Years, Pt. 2” featuring Steve Kazee, the only track on “Twilight Saga — Breaking Dawn Pt. 2” available for purchase a la carte. It debuted last week on Hot Digital Songs at No. 13 with 70,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Her original solo version, from the “Breaking Dawn: Part 1” soundtrack, cracked the 2 million sold mark last week and is now at 2.1 million. It trails her biggest hit, “Jar of Hearts” from her debut album, “lovestrong.”; the single has sold 3.3 million copies.

“I always wanted it to be a duet,” she says, “because that’s the way I wrote it – part Edward and part for Bella.  I got to add a verse and then arrange it with a full orchestra with David Campbell. Being able to re-do it – I was incredibly blown away. When I went to the premiere, it felt more like everyone’s song – it’s for the whole franchise. I’m really honored.”

Stephenie Meyer Talks What She’s Writing Now, Twilight Reflections, and The Host with THR

In a new and very in-depth interview with THR Stephenie Meyer talks about where she is in her writing, what her hopes for The Host are, and reflections on Twilight and the movie industry. A brief snippet is below, but it’s an entire must read on THR!

THR: How far are you on the second book?

SM: Not very far. It’s been a really challenging last year. There just hasn’t been a lot of time for writing.

THR: Where do you see the story progressing?

SM: Not having written it doesn’t mean you don’t know everything that’s going to happen. I have very detailed outlines, I do a lot of outlining to the point where there’s dialogue in my outlines. The outline for this is about 50 pages long. It gets very in depth. So I know exactly what’s going to happen, There’s a lot you can do with a science fiction world. There’s a lot of exploration you can do, so there’s a lot of different directions.

THR: The first book was a hefty one. How long will the next book be?

SM: I don’t have any idea. It usually surprises me. I always think I’m going to be able to tell something in a shorter period of time than it takes me, which I’m sure is a big flaw, but I think it’s gonna be shorter than the first one.

THR: How many books do you see in the series?

SM: Three. I have a pretty good end arc in mind for it, so hopefully that will happen.

THR: And you’re planning to adapt them all to film?

SM: I think they’d like to keep going. That’s the conversation I’ve had. I think the biggest hold up is the fact that I’m writing so slow.
