Fan Site Friday: Interview with Bill Condon

Last week at Comic Con the fan sites had the opportunity to interview Bill Condon after the Breaking Dawn panel.  Below is the transcript of the interview.  Please be aware there is discussion of the clips seen at Comic Con so if you don’t want to be spoiled on anything read with caution! (You can find the clips  here)

Q: About the honeymoon scene, I noticed of course the humor in that. Why did you guys choose to do it that way and how did that decision come about?

Bill: About being funny when she’s getting ready? It just felt like it was human. It was like, again, making everything as real as possible, and it’s like anybody in that moment when it’s like “Oh my God, it’s about to happen”, it’s one thing it’s gonna happen this night. God, it’s Bella, after all this time. And it’s a vampire, you know? But now is the moment and is just about making it as relatable as possible. Like, what do you do? You just try to control it in any way you possibly can. You know, you brush your teeth for the tenth time and do all those things to make yourself think that you’re ready, which of course you can’t do. And then the way we cut it it was just like a lot of jump cuts to make it like she’s sort of this nervous jangly thing. You know the way Kristen goes? (taps fingers impatiently on table, everyone laughs) that was the rhythm of it, you know? We matched that with the way we presented it.

Q: Have you had experience working with a lot of child actors, and what was it like working with all the Reneesmes?
Bill: Oh, yeah (laughs). That’s for Part 2! I had done a little before, but not as much as now. First, Mackenzie, she’s a 10 year old going on 30. She’s so mature and smart, so that was a pleasure. Sometimes it was hard because the other actresses were actually just there. It was always going to be just Mackenzie’s expressions and things like that, so it was a very specific technical thing that even I was learning as we did it. But I have to say, they were real troopers these girls. [Read more…]

Bill Condon Interview at Movies.com

Bill-CondonsoloLaura was able to interview Bill Condon over on Movies.com:

Movies.com: You showed two clips today. For the clip that was of the honeymoon scene in the secluded island getaway, the thing that struck me was that there is so much silence. There isn’t a lot of dialogue. That could result in intended awkward silences or just unwanted awkwardness, can you relate how that choice came about?

Condon: That’s very intriguing. I was looking because we started to do a temp mix on the movie, and the whole last reel it’s 20 minutes long and there are only 59 lines. So maybe that’s a thing. I don’t know. But there, there is this incredible elephant in the room, and it’s called a bed. It’s between them, and it’s almost comic how much this has been anticipated. Forget about the fan anticipation, but just the anticipation of these two characters. So inevitably, it’s about what’s going on between the lines. The two actors just captured that so well. Part of it is its awkwardness is funny too, but in a very real way.

Movies.com: In other words the audience is laughing with Bella not at her as she’s flinging all these skimpy outfits out of the suitcase?

Condon: Right, right.

Movies.com: In the Hall H panel, you talked about how you feel that there is no bigger Twilight fan on the set than Kristen Stewart. Can you expand on that?

Condon: Right from the beginning she was a real collaborator. When I sit down with her with and a draft of the script and she says, “God I miss this part not being in,” most of the time we put it right back in. I think she never loses sight of what it was like for her the first time she read Breaking Dawn. She’s reading it as a fan, but also with the responsibility of giving and living up to what is expressed in the books about what Bella is feeling. She becomes an important voice to listen to in all of that. As I said we’d talk about it, then we’d rehearse it, then we’d block it, then we’d come to the day and we would still find some nuisances that we’d want to explore having reread it again the night before.”

Bill Condon Interview from Comic Con via Tompson on Hollywood

While Jen and Laura are having all the fun, Lori is sitting at home in Tennessee watching bit by bit as interviews and footage from SDCC is being loaded. I found this little gem of an interview with Bill Condon from Thompson on Hollywood and I have to say, I’m rather jealous!  I don’t know how they got such intimate access to Bill Condon but it is up close and personal!   The sound is wonderful, the questions are meaningful, and the answers he gives are just unbelievable!  The only downfall of this interview is that it ends rather abruptly. Let us know if you think this interview is as good as I think it is by leaving us a comment!

UPDATE! Here’s part 2 of the interview, found by the Twilight Examiner.
