Breaking Dawn Casting and the IMDB

We’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about casting for Breaking Dawn.  Can fans audition? What company is involved? Should resumes be sent out? Is the info on the IMDB accurate? So, here’s a rundown of the latest:

Facts:

  • Filming will take place in both Louisiana and Vancouver
  • Production Weekly confirmed the dates of the filming in Louisiana
  • Confirmed dates can change slightly due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances
  • We can’t help you get cast. If we had any influence on production Edward would be driving the right car and Alphie and Pel would be playing the Volturi wives while trying not to drool on Michael Sheen.
  • Not sure how to break into the business? See Lana Veenker’s blog, there is good advice there and it’s free! Also see her advice on scams! If anyone tells you that you need to pay them money to get into a Breaking Dawn audition they are lying!

Unknown:

  • What specific roles will be needed. In other words will some vampires be combined such as the Jessica/Lauren of Anna Kendrick’s character or the Eric/Ben of Justin Chon’s character.
  • Will there be an open call for extras. (See past history)
  • Will there be an open call for other parts. (See past history)
  • Will they have an open call for Renesmee (in our opinion the part would be at least twins just to deal with child labor laws)

Past History:

  • The original movie had vast calls for extras the others did not.
  • The only open calls for speaking roles were for Native American/First Nations actors. Every other part, you needed to be in the business, with experience with an agent.
  • We will publicize open calls as we have done in the past.

Now onto the IMDB. It’s like wikipedia, anyone can edit it. The day after Kristen Stewart was officially announced as Bella, the IMDB read that Emily Browning was rumored to play the part. A few months ago someone replaced Tinsel Korey’s name as Emily with actress Brenna Lee Roth, and Edi Gathegi popped back up on the Eclipse cast list.  In a practical joke that had fans scurrying for the hidden meaning, Andrew of TwiSource decided to list that the tagline of New Moon was “Somewhere Bella’s Stove Is On.” So when you see things up their don’t put too much stock in them.  Until a film actually starts filming the info up there isn’t always solid.

Now if you want solid extra casting info here’s something, it’s not Twilight, but it does potentially involve seeing Taylor Lautner. Check out this info if you are in the Pittsburgh area.

EDITED: Amanda Bell (The Twilight Examiner) just verified that Xavier Samuel is not in Breaking Dawn though the IMDB seems to think so. We just verified that the name Renesmee is unchanged in Breaking Dawn. There was rumor today that her name was changed.

Hit Fix: Why Such a Gap Between Breaking Dawn 1 & 2 Explained

breaking_dawncoverAs usual Hit Fix provides some spot on analysis:

“After releasing both “Twilight” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” in November of 2008 and 2009, Summit made the seemingly smart move of moving “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” to a June 30, 2010 release date.  This was because of both fervent interest from the franchise’s fanbase and the expectation that opening in the summer would allow for a larger gross due to the fact many teenagers would be out of school and able to see the film numerous times during the work week.  Instead, “Eclipse” has grossed less than the previous chapter, “New Moon,” with only $288.1 million domestic and a total of $644.8 million worldwide so far.  “New Moon” ended up with $296 million domestic and $709 million worldwide and it’s hard to see “Eclipse” matching that total as its grosses have slowed considerably.  Considering “Eclipse” received universally better reviews than the previous two chapters and was the most action packed (i.e., male friendly) of the series this has to be something of a disappointment for Summit.  Granted, there is no need to shed any tears as the studio and series creator Stephenie Meyer are still swimming in profits as the picture only cost $65 million.”

Breaking Dawn Part 2 Date Revealed

Summit LogoThis just in from Summit Entertainment:

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 – 11/16/12
Director: Bill Condon
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
The astonishing conclusion to the series, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, PART 2, illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.

So what does this all mean to your Twilight lives?

The movies will film a la Lord of the Rings style concurrently from late October/early November 2010 until April/May 2011 in both Louisiana and Vancouver.

The footage of each film (and educated guess on our part) will appear at Comic Con 2011 and 2012

The movies will powerhouse the MTV Movie Awards, and the Kids Choice Awards.

Technological advances are occurring in CGI and other special effects. especially the second part of Breaking Dawn can benefit from these advances. Spreading out gives more opportunity for these advances many of which are post production advances.  Does this mean 3-D, or better Benjamin Button type tech?  Unknown.

By doing Thanksgiving releases the movies avoid the 2012 summer crunch with the following movies that are bound to suck up movie dollars and be blockbusters: Batman 3, The Avengers, Battleship, Star Trek 2, G.I. Joe 2, Spider-Man and Superman. Eclipse has benefited tremendously from a summer of movies that were supposed to be huge like Robin Hood and Airbender and in the end didn’t live up to hype or expectation.  Repeat box office dollars went to Eclipse rather than other films.  Eclipse has thrown the gauntlet and claimed the Thanksgiving spots(spots that worked well for the first two movies). MTV discovered the same roughly a month ago when they had a discussion with a Summit executive.

Part 1 to debut: 11/18/11

Part 2 to debut: 11/16/12

Step Up 3D and What I Now Think of Breaking Dawn and 3D

Last night I had the chance to watch a prescreening of Step Up 3D. I’m a HUGE So You Think You Can Dance and performing arts junkie. Never mind Dancing With the Stars, bring on the real deal, that’s what excites me. I first got interested in the film when I saw the preview during Eclipse. I was even willing to stomach the 3D experience because of the dance nerd that I am.

I haven’t done 3D since I was in high school and my experiences with it then were frankly bad. I hated the medium with all those odd red, blue and green colors through the heavily tinted glasses. Really, I’ve had no desire to repeat the experience until everyone and their uncle started yammering about how much the technology improved and how “You just have to see Avatar”. Well I didn’t see Avatar in the theater I saw it in 2-D via a Blockbuster rental last week and was like “what’s all the fuss, it was a great movie just like this.”

So where is all this going? I know there’s this huge debate right now on whether Breaking Dawn should be 3D or not. I’ve been firmly rooted in the “For the love of all that’s holy, NO!’ camp. However, I got (and rightly so) called out on my view by someone saying “If you haven’t seen the medium how can you give an opinion”. Point well taken, so now I’d have a chance to experience the 3D on a film that was specifically shot in 3D(not a post production tweak a la Airbender) and that I was interested in.

So here are my thoughts on Step Up 3D and then what I think of Breaking Dawn potential in light of this.

    • There’s a vast improvement in the picture quality. The hazy red and blue lines and the ridiculously tinted glasses are gone.   I was pleasantly surprised that the glasses are actually wide enough to slip over my own glasses and not be distracting. I had kind of resigned myself to having to see a 3D blur due to the glasses issue, it wasn’t the case.
    • The 3-D works at its best in the dance sequences from everything from a Parkour meets Capoeira style routine over rooftops in Brooklyn to three actual dance battles featuring a meld of  Hip Hop, Break Dancing, Popping, and Krump.
    • 3-D also works in what I’d call a vista type scene. The opening shot is a camera, probably on a crane, zooming in to a scene of a NYU orientation walking tour in Washington Square Park. You literally arrived into the shot under the leaves of trees and saw the benches, monuments 3D style.
    • Another great usage of the 3D is specifically what I would term sheer cool effect. There is a sequence of these magnetized, mini-LED lights being thrown around and you feel like you are in a field of fireflies.
    • As far as the movie itself went the storyline is predicable in the boy-screws-up-relationship-with-girl and girl-breaks-boys-heart themes. There are several groanworthy lines that sound like they came right from a daytime soap opera. However, it’s a dance movie, people aren’t so much looking at the plot as they are the dancing. With apologies to A Chorus Line “Dance 10 Writing 3”
    • From So You Think You Can Dance Twitch and Legacy have roles. Twitch has more dialogue and is a decent actor. The shame is that there isn’t enough solo focus on their skills. I knew one particular moment was Legacy via his signature handwalk, but if you are not familiar with him, you’d never know as you can’t see his face. the real standouts are these Argentine twin brothers (who were actually at the theater where I was) they totally steal the show dancing and acting. They have some genius comic skills. I hope somebody sees these guys and picks them up because they are going places.
    • Also a standout in the acting department is the kid who plays the lovable, wet-behind-the-ears protagonist, Moose. He has the acting chops, the dance skills, and the goofy personality. He’s endearing rather than annoying (and it would be very easy for his part to become annoying). He and the girl who he doesn’t realize he’s in love with have a routine that is a homage to Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds in Singing  in the Rain that is sheer genius.
    • When 3D doesn’t work, on the other hand, boy is it distracting! Here’s where it goes bad:
          • Random moments when they did these reverse crowd shots to make you feel like you were in an arena had the opposite effect. It felt more like an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 only without the snarky robots.
          • Moments when they had it look like someone in the middle of the theater stood up and fist pumped were beyond annoying particularly the third time they used the effect. It was really distracting and totally took me out of the scene rather than made me feel a part of it.
          • Close ups on faces distort, hands way down screen are fine, faces…not so much.
          • Exposition scenes with people standing around and just talking look like bad pop-up book images.  Instead of true 3D, I get a punched out 2D effect with really crisply defined body outlines. It really screams pop-up book and not in a good way.
          • Kissing fortunately stayed 2D but 3D elements around kissing like falling slurpie droplets and flowers make the romance stupid. Seriously, first kiss under sticky slurpie droplets? What moron thought that was romantic!

So what does all this mean in my opinion for Breaking Dawn? Assuming the movie is split where Stephenie Meyer indicated that she sees the split which is Bella waking up as a vampire, here are my thoughts:

Breaking Dawn 1: No need for 3D at all. It would be a waste and a distraction. I don’t want a 3D baby-bump, blood shakes, or to be distracted on Isle Esme with 3D waves. Let’s leave well enough alone.

Breaking Dawn 2: It would work, but more as an enhancement of CGI. 3D becoming the special effect. For example, anything involving the training of the vampires and the vampires displaying their powers would work 3D.  Bella opening her eyes and a true first person through Bella’s vampire eyes perspective shot 3D would work. Vista shots like playing with Renesmee in the snowy field where Irina sees her or sweeping panorama of the exteriors of the  Cullen house grounds and the cottage would work.  On the other hand, what you don’t want in 3D is romance anything I’m laughing just thinking about a 3D snog and PG-13 simulated shag; Renesmee anything (as I said last night on Twitter, there is a fine line between OMG she adorable and run for your life it’s coming at us!) toddling around, exposition scenes (and there’s a ton of exposition in the book) will look like bad pop-up books. So, is it cost effective to shoot in 3D for the limited way in which I’ve described? I don’t have the answer to that one.  So for me the 3D works, but only in a very limited capacity or it takes you right out of the story in what is a linear romance and danger tale  with some supernatural elements. If it can be kept to the specific displays of the supernatural, fine by me. Otherwise, I’m sticking to 2D.

Cinematical: 10 Films That Weren’t At Comic Con

eclipse-posterCinematical covers, some of it tongue-in-cheek, 10 films that should have been at Comic Con. Breaking Dawn and the missing legions of Twilight fans make the cut.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: My apathy towards the giant robots extends similarly to the vamp/wolf/true love triangle of the Twilight series, but while I understand that the lengthy delay between the final two films means that the legions of K-Stew and R-Pattz won’t be back in full force until next year’s inevitable panel, it still started to resemble something like tradition to have the young girls camping out and the old boys complain about all the precious seats they’re talking up in Hall H that day.

(Regardless, I will take this opportunity to plug an astute piece over at Pajiba all about the Twilight fan-fic authors who held their ground at this year’s event, albeit off-site. And yes, I sometimes write for that site, but more importantly, I didn’t write this particular piece, and as a writer, I kinda wish that I had.)”

Melissa Rosenberg, Breaking Dawn Glimpse

melissarosenbergredcMelissa Rosenberg talked to Pop Sugar about what may or may not be included in Breaking Dawn.

PopSugar: How did you feel about the decision to split Breaking Dawn into two movies?
Melissa Rosenberg: Relief, actually, because it was going to be quite a challenge to condense such a large book into one movie. That’s always the challenge with all of these and, more so, Breaking Dawn. Having a little more room to breathe is nice . . . on the other hand, there’s also the challenge of making sure there’s enough to fill two movies.

PS: We’ve heard there are some scenes you want to avoid showing on screen in Breaking Dawn. For example, Bella giving birth. Can you tell us why?
MR: That was a misquote. The childbirth — all the scenes, I feel — should be on screen. I think perhaps what I was referring to was, would we actually see Edward’s teeth through the placenta? I don’t think so. I don’t think we need to see that, and if someone needs to see that, I think they should take a look at that. [Laughs.] I believe it will be implied, but I don’t think we’ll see teeth in the placenta”

Breaking Dawn Filming Locations Confirmed

This just in from Summit:

Summit Logo

Summit Entertainment’s THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN will be filmed in both Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Vancouver over the next year starting this fall. The next chapter of THE TWILIGHT SAGA will be released as two separate films with the first of the two slated to be released in theatres on November 18, 2011.

Academy Award® winner Bill Condon will direct both films starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner along with Billy Burke as Charlie Swan as well as returning members of the Cullen Family including Peter Facinelli as Carlisle, Elizabeth Reaser as Esme, Jackson Rathbone as Jasper, Nikki Reed as Rosalie, Ashley Greene as Alice and Kellan Lutz as Emmett.

The project, based on the fourth novel in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, is currently being written by Melissa Rosenberg with Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt and Stephenie Meyer producing.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.

There is no specific information as to exactly what will be filmed in which location.  There is speculation that since Jacob’s House, the Quileute beach, and the meadow physically exist in the Vancouver area that those locations would likely be used again. Interiors could obviously be built in either location. Bella’s house is a modular, transportable unit. It too could be in either location. Scene on Isle Esme and in the hunt for Cullen supporters in the confrontation could lend themselves nicely to Louisiana geography.

Interview: Kristen Stewart Talks The Twilight Saga: Eclipse via IESB

With more of the action, love, friendship, jealousy and passion that the series has become known for, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ups the ante with a revenge-fueled, romantic continuation of the internationally popular vampire story, based on Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling book series.

With a the evil vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) and a Newborn Army (led by Xavier Samuel) after her, Bella Swan struggles to get her love, vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and his family, to work with her best friend, werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), and his Pack, to protect her and keep all of them safe from the Volturi (which includes Dakota Fanning).

At a press conference to promote the upcoming release of the film, actress Kristen Stewart talked about her love for acting, the journey of Bella Swan and why she’s happy that Breaking Dawn will be shot in two parts.

Eclipse’ Producer Wyck Godfrey on 3D, ‘Breaking Dawn,’ and More via Fearnet

I like to picture the two-part Breaking Dawn movie as a NC-17 gynecology horror flick packed with pillow-biting sex and bellies ripped open, and guess what? I’m not alone. In fact, Twilight Saga producer Wyck Godfrey is the one who brought up David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers when we met to discuss this month’s Eclipse, in which Twilight heroine Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) finds herself torn between her vampire and werewolf beaus as an army of bloodsuckers threatens to kill everyone she loves. (He also told us he’d love to cast Stewart in his remake of the brutal French-language pic Martyrs. More on that here.)
But Godfrey knows his Twilight audience, so I asked him to set the record straight on rumors that the two-part final installment, Breaking Dawn, could go for an R-rating. Over the course of a highly entertaining discussion, he explained why 30 Days of Night director David Slade was chosen to helm Eclipse, what made Dreamgirls razzle-dazzler Bill Condon right for Breaking Dawn, and how elements of horror filmmaking factor into the vampire romance franchise.
We discussed Bella’s newfound confidence in Eclipse, and how her infamous upcoming childbirth scene could possibly go down with a PG-13 rating. He mused on how 3D might be used to film part of Breaking Dawn, which begins shooting this November. He gave a compelling defense of Bella Swan’s problematic attractions to both Edward and Jacob, a love triangle that reaches a boiling point in Eclipse but develops new complexity as we move into Breaking Dawn. Most importantly, Twi-hards, Wyck Godfrey promised plenty of feathers.
