We don’t know that David Slade or any director for that matter is taking unsolicited film critic advice but Richard Roeper has weighed in with his two cents. What do you think?
The Great Eclipse Trailer Debate
Last night rumor ran wild on the Internet about there being a public, pre-screening of Eclipse. After laughing really hard, Pel’s reaction was, “No one is test screening ANYTHING right now. They’re all watching Avatar & saying I’m gonna get you James Cameron and your little dog too. If they’re test screening Eclipse this weekend then I’m having a full frontal threesome snog with Peter Facinelli and Billy Burke.”
The reason for this is that is doesn’t make any kind of sense for them to publicly test screen what is going to be one of the hottest movies of 2010 6 months ahead of time during Christmas Week when no one is working. They don’t need to test screen Eclipse 6 months out as a rough cut with CGI not in place in front of a general audience. They do that with little known indies that they aren’t sure are going to make it, not one of the biggest summer blockbusters of 2010. Will the have company insiders and cast members see it? Sure. Not unknown audience members.
This then lead to a discussion of when will we see a trailer or teaser. David Slade recently said he’d have a New Year’s surprise, so what could that surprise be. Here’s what we think is likely and what isn’t. we have no insider info here. we haven’t been tipped off. This is our opinion based on usual industry standards, analyzing opinions of experts, and our experience.
Trailer out at Golden Globes: Not Likely
- As much as we love the Twilight Saga, the Golden Globes isn’t a Twilight kind of film. The news stories coming off of the Globes are all going to be about who won, who should have won, and what this now means for the Oscar race. In short, they aren’t really looking to mention anyone’s trailer. It would take a backseat, and when you have a movie like Eclipse, you want that to be the lead story.
Trailer out at People’s Choice Awards: Not Likely
- Now unlike the Golden Globes this is EXACTLY the kind of awards show where you might see a Twilight Saga trailer debut. However, timing is everything. The People’s Choice Awards are on January 6th. If we were going to be seeing something Eclipse the PR moguls would have put the word out already.
Trailer out for Remember Me: Likely
- March 12 is a great time for a trailer to debut. New Moon will be winding down it’s box office run, and they’ll want to focus on the next best thing.
- Unlike Bandslam, which really no one wanted to see teens or adults–let alone see because a trailer was playing in front of it, the word on the forums is that everyone is interested in Remember Me. The Remember Me trailer that aired in front of New Moon sealed it. Robert Pattison playing moody bad boy redeemed by Emile DeRavin with father Pierce Brosnan—we’re having a hard time finding a downside to this movie.
- This brings up the question, will the trailer get taped and go viral online? No question about it; however, if it’s also in front of a movie that people are actually more interested in they also opt to see it on the big screen as well as play it online over, and over again.
Trailer on New Moon DVD: Likely
- Amazon and other distribution sources are putting the DVD release at mid-March. This makes sense given the timing of the Twilight DVD.
- Again talking about timing we’re putting to rest one product and moving towards the next, kind of a no brainer. On top of that think sales/rentals 20 years from now. You want to get your audience to rent/buy the sequel. How do you ensure that? Put a teaser on the DVD features.
So what the heck was David Slade Tweeting about? Taking a guess here, we are going to go for three possibilities. One, a still from the movie. Two, the date the teaser/trailer will air. Three, a look at a character driven movie poster.

Eclipse To Go IMAX
According to the Cinematical Twitter, Eclipse is going to be releasing in not only regular theaters, but also IMAX theaters. The information is also now being confirmed by the official Twilight movie Twitter.
The movie is also following in the footsteps of the next Harry Potter movie by releasing on a Wednesday rather than a Friday. So for all you midnight release people that means lining up on a Tuesday night. A midweek release, in theory, produces a strong opening. Also since Eclipse opens on June 30th, it opens in advance of those traveling for the July 4th holiday in the USA.
EDITED: Collider has the official press release:
“Twilight moviegoers will have a whole new way to experience this next installment of the series, with the enhanced image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience putting them IN the movie,” said Richie Fay, Summit Entertainment’s President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution. “The IMAX release puts us on the event film calendar for 2010, and we’re very excited to work with IMAX to bring a new kind of film to the IMAX theatre network.”
“Our 2010 film slate continues to fill out with strong titles, and a film from this incredible franchise is a very welcome addition,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “This title fills a valuable spot in our 2010 summer release window, and will no doubt thrill IMAX audiences.”
“We’re very excited to work with our new partners at Summit Entertainment to transport the very loyal and enthusiastic Twilight fans into the world of the Volturi via The IMAX Experience,” added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “With our growing theatre network, we’re poised to take advantage of the rapidly growing fan-base devoted to this dynamic, cutting edge series.”
So are you an IMAX or a regular theater kind of viewer, or both?
Rumor Control—-Not R
Despite what may or may not be quoted from an off-handed remark by one of the New Moon actors, Eclipse will not be rated R. It was a condition of the movies being made that they would NOT be rated more than a PG-13. Stephenie Meyer would not allow them to do an R version because she does not see R-movies. If for some reason it was rated R by the MPAA it would have to be re-cut to change that.
In fact, during our set visit and our conversation with producer Wyck Godfrey we were talking how if they made Breaking Dawn (which we are dying along with the rest of you for some sort of official word…but we digress…)how they would go about keeping scenes within PG-13 bounds. The romance scenes are easy enough to shoot that way since the book “fades to black”, as for the other scenes think about network shows like ER and how much they were able to show on primetime TV and still be real:
“Q: Have you discussed that, storyboarded it[Breaking Dawn]?
Wyck: No, well, since it exists as a book and it’s a part of the series, all of our minds individually think “How will we do that?”…
My wife is an OBGYN, so I know it can be done in a PG-13 way. I’ll bring her on as an expert. (Laughs) (Did you like it?) I loved it. I mean for me, it’s mature in a way that speaks, you know, to someone my age really. Gosh, I mean I have three kids, you totally understand the next level of Bella’s life is going to be the adult life.
What was so daring about Breaking Dawn, and so brilliant about it, she didn’t pander what she thought her audience was. She said, this is what’s right for Bella and Edward, and this is where their story needs to go. I really loved that about it.
Certainly there are things that are shocking that are like, I never thought it would go that way. That’s good! I mean, that’s what makes for good drama. So I love it. I don’t know how we are going to do it! (Laughs)”
Peter Murphy With Eclipse Cameo
MTV is reporting that,
“”[When I was young], I was a huge fan of a guy who does a cameo in ‘Eclipse,’ a guy named Peter Murphy,” revealed Billy Burke, the veteran actor who plays Bella’s father, Charlie Swan, when he stopped by the MTV studios this week. “He used to be the singer of Bauhaus…He came in for a cameo, and I was wildly excited about that,” marveled Burke, who has his own musical career on the side from his acting. “I saw his name on the call sheet, and I had to give him a call and ask him to have some dinner with me, because I was a huge fan when I was growing up.”
Eclipse Filming Officially Over
“Twilight Eclipse officially wrapped shooting, at 4.30 am October 29th. Physically and emotionally exhausted. DAVID S”
On behalf of Twilight fans everywhere:
THANK YOU DAVID!
Eclipse Wrapping Up
Most of the shooting for Eclipse is finished. Many of the actors returned to Los Angles, or wherever home is, over the weekend. David Slade tweeted a pictures from the wrap party that was held at a Vancouver area aquarium.
The actors will need their rest as the PR for New Moon is about to kick into high gear! According to E!, “Pattinson and New Moon director Chris Weitz will kick off the press tour in Japan Nov. 2-3. Then, they’ll join Stewart and Taylor Lautner when they hype the film in Paris on Nov. 10. Castmembers are also expected to visit countries and continents including Germany, South America and Australia in support of the film.”
Eclipse Shooting: Celebrity Sites Call it Unique
The article in Canada’s Globe and Mail talks about how traditional media sites have never seen anything quite like the Twilight Saga fury and how they get their info. (Photo credit ML Splash News)
“The Twilight films are based on Stephenie Meyer’s novels of the same name about the vampire Edward (Pattinson) and Bella (Stewart), the human teen who falls for him. The novels were bestsellers before they hit the big screen, but the films have turned the Twilight industry into an even larger phenomenon – fuelling a staggering interest in the stars.
“Any and every photo – it doesn’t matter how bad it is, it doesn’t matter how little you can see of the people, the fans want to see everything and they will look at every single photo all day long,” says Goodson.
To say the photos are good for driving traffic to the websites is an understatement.”
The Newborn Army Is On The Move
Filming of Eclipse continues in Vancouver. A recent scene, that those present surmise involves the newborn army because Xavier Samuel and Jodelle Ferland were present, was shot down at the waterfront. Various onlookers got to see quite the site by standing on public land on the opposite shore. Mandy who ended up using the public rest room, got the shock of her life when she came out of the stall to find red-eyed extras waiting to use the facilities, now there’s something you don’t see everyday!
Vancity Allie, whose photo appears left, described the scene as:
“I had a chance to see a new set being filmed for Eclipse… the scene where the newborns arrive in Forks. It’s a picturesque scene, with mountains and water framing the background of the shot, and a sparse unoccupied beach for the newborns to arrive on… then they disappear into the forest. The vampire newborns looked absolutely chilling, and their rugged military-like outfits along with steely, determined glares just added to the mood. Filmed early in the morning, this scene was designed to look as if it had been shot at night, possibly just after dusk or just before dawn.”
See the rest of Allie’s photos and write-up here.
Mandy also visited locations similar to Allie. Mandy says:
“The vampires would simply go underwater once the camera was rolling then one by one emerge out of the water and walk slowly, menacingly towards to the shore. I love the darker angle David Slade is taking to this movie. I can’t wait for Eclipse to come out… but I have to wait for New Moon first… which I can’t wait for either :)”
