Fansite Friday: New Moon Set Report

On April 28th of 2009 I had the privilege of visiting the set of The Twilight Saga: New Moon in Vancouver, British Columbia. Being the intense fan that I am of all things Twilight and Stephenie Meyer, I actually began preparing myself for this chance way back in December by applying for a passport! I wasn’t going to miss out on such a huge opportunity because I couldn’t leave the country. Heck, I was willing to go to Italy if I had to. (And let me tell you, it would have been SUCH an immense hardship to have to go to Italy. Who really wants to visit a movie set in Europe anyway? Not me. Insert sarcastic face here.)

For as long as I’ve been involved in the Twilight Saga (and I think I can safely say that I’m kind of the momma bear of the fandom) I’ve taken the stand point of reporting on everything as I see it to bring it to the rest of the fandom who may not have had the same opportunities that I have had. Yes, I am just as fan gurlish over the actors as the next person (as you will see in my report), but I also think that the surrounding atmosphere and landscape is just as interesting. Incidentally, the landscape (or more specifically the weather) plays such a huge part in the filming that it’s virtually impossible to do a set report without commenting on it in some way.

In fact, if I may take this chance to put in a personal request to anyone who ever gets the chance to interview anyone involved in the film, let’s all agree in a new phrasing of a certain question. Please refrain from asking, “What was your biggest challenge with the film?” Because the answer is ALWAYS, “The weather.” Instead ask, “What was your biggest challenge with the film OTHER THAN the weather?” We will all learn so much more in the long run! Seriously. Wait until you hear EVERYONE talk about in our interviews. So, let’s ask a different question. The weather is bad. It’s supposed to be raining. That’s kind of the point. Let’s talk about something else. [Read more…]

Comic Con New Moon Panel Report

Alphie and Be My Escape just got in from the New Moon Panel and clip screening.  After sitting through some great footage of A Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland, and yes Tron, as well as listening to the Q&A with Bob Zemeckis followed by Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, we finally got to hear the Summit panel.

Of course the screaming rivaled that for the Beatles, but eventually died down so that we could have some real Q&A time with Chris Weitz, Rob Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Ashley Greene.  One of the most memorable questions was when they were all asked about what they were looking forward to doing in future films.  Ashley said she wanted to do the heavy fight scene in Eclipse.  Taylor said he was looking forward to the deeper love triangle and the tent scene.  But it was Rob and Kristen’s answers that really got the crowd reaction.  Kristen said she couldn’t wait to REALLY get pregnant, putting a jib in the many media outlets that was posted rumors to the fact that she was already pregnant.  Then Rob said he was looking forward to the cesarean birth in Breaking Dawn.  Much laughter will be heard on our footage once we get it uploaded.

On another note, the same guy from the press conference who got in a supposedly “screened” personal question again showed up in Hall H (how he accomplished this when Pel couldn’t even get back in is beyond us).  His question this time was about how they managed to portray Dracula… and he said it with plastic fangs in his mouth.  Not even cool and the panel pretty much just moved on.

The two clips that were shown… and I state this now that there are spoilers here… were of Bella and Jacob and the motor bikes and Bella trying to save Edward before he steps into the sun.

We will post footage of the Q&A as soon as we can get back to the hotel and get some power to the camera!  Other than that, I’ll wrap up now so that those of you who don’t want to spoiled won’t have to read any further.

SPOILERS!!

WARNING!  There are spoilers here, so look away if you really don’t want to know!

For the first clip, Jacob shows Bella how to work the bike, and as she reeves the engine a “ghost” of Edward appears.  This spurs her on and she heads down the road passing multiple “ghosts” on her way until she crashes.  Jacob rushes to her and worries over the bleeding gash on her forehead.  She apologizes for the blood, to which he says, “it’s only blood, Bella,” and removes his shirt so he can use it to clean her up.  Bella gives him the once over and tells him he’s kinda beautiful.  He then asks her is she maybe bumped her head too hard.

The second scene was of Alice and Bella driving through Volterra surrounded by the people in red robes.  Bella darts out of the car and rushes through the crowds toward the clock tower.  She sees Edward just as he is opening up his shirt and getting ready to step out into the sun.  She darts over though the fountain telling him to stop and then… the footage ends.  Great teaser there!

New Moon Press Conference Report

Pel attended the New Moon Press Conference with Kallie of Twilight Seires Theories and Kimmy of His Golden Eyes. We got to the designated spot (which was kept an uber secret) at about 8:00. Once our press credentials and names on the list were confirmed, we managed to get in and to get a seat in the second row. The first row was reserved from photographers only.  Everyone from fansites, to Rotten Tomatoes, to Boarders Media, you name it was there.

They established a few ground rules to start (which comes into play later) they were basically: front row photographers only, no flash during the discussion panel but photo op before and after, and limit questions to the movie New Moon itself not their personal lives or other projects.

So, as we were waiting, Pel saw Steve AKA “Capone” from Ain’t It Cool News. Pel had met Steve back in Chicago at the Flashback Weekend convention and they swapped this year vs. last year  Twilight Saga Comic Con stories.  One of the things Steve and Pel both agreed on is that Twilight is now a bigtime, mainstream studio franchise. The press set up was way different. Last year it was more like trying to get people to cover it, this year it’s who made the list. Pel said, “Well, it’s graduated from being ‘The Little Indie Movie That Could’.

Eventually Kristen, Tayor, and Rob came in about 20 seconds of space in between them. What was really funny is the cameras zoomed in on Tayor and Kristen right away. It took them a second to realize Rob was about 10 feet away and because of how Taylor and Kristen were initially standing there wasn’t room for Rob to stand next to them. Rob looked on amused that no one seemed to realize right away that he was there (don’t worry in about 10 seconds the media caught on) and then Taylor and Kristen looked like “Where’s Rob?” realized the problem and nudged over.

After that the panel discussion began. Rob seemed truly jet lagged but managed a couple of funny one liners like when asked by an LA TV Station “What question did he never want to be asked again?” He responded, “I don’t know, what is it like to kiss Taylor Lautner.”  The room cracked up but Taylor didn’t hear the answer at first because he was saying something to Kristen. He had this hillarious “hmm obviously I missed something” look on his face and then just went to the million dollar smile and everyone cracked up again.    The same question was then posed to Tayor and Kristen.

Taylor said that he really doesn’t ever want to be asked to growl again. A lot of fans ask him to growl when they meet him and he really doesn’t enjoy growling on command.

Kristen thought about it and said, ‘There nothing really, you could ask me anything.” (Mind you she clearly meant regarding the movie filming.)

So then they announce two more questions and the last question goes to a guy goes to every press conference dressed in a bad brown 1970’s suit, his tie pulled down, shirt untucked, avaitor sunglasses, and a retro-mustache that rivaled Billy Burke’s.  With all the media in the room they somehow gave a question to this guy and it was the last question. This is a guy whose website is focused on satire, edgy stuff that pokes fun at the entertainment business. Nothing wrong with that, not like it pretends to be anything other than that. We don’t really know what the team was thinking when they gave him a question, it’s kind of like assuming the rep from the Howard Stern show  would ask a legit question.

So what does he ask…words to the effect of “You guys have such great on screen chemistry. Anything going on off screen?  The reaction was predicable the entire rest of the press lets out groans, explicative, eye rollage. Taylor, Kristen, and Rob looked at him like he had lost his mind. Fortunately they let someone else ask a final question.

Pel is editing the footage and should have it up shortly as well as some behind the scenes items.

Hit Fix New Moon Set Report: Day 2

Hit Fix is continuing their coverage of their New Moon set visit.

“Showing acting isn’t always a glamorous life, our next take finds Pattinson  once again on the ground (where’s been on and off for at least two hours) writhing in pain as Alice looks up and says, “He’s O.K.” take after take.  Eventually, Edward’s pain is accurately captured and Pattinson is allowed to walk back to his trailer with his bare chest visible for all the ladies in my party to swoon over.

With Edward gone, the crew continues filming reaction shots. This time? A close up on Jane who stares ominously where Edward is supposed to be.  Notably, Fanning looks almost unrecognizable in her Volturi outfit.  She’s stunningly beautiful looking more and more like a ready to graduate senior in high school rather than the sophomore she really is.  Notably though, at least on the days we were on set, Jane says nothing.  And sadly, Fanning did not speak to us during our time there.”

Part 2 is here and in case you missed part one you can get that here.

New Moon Indonesian Advertising

This appeared in Indonesia at a movie theater lobby recently. Wonder how many people are riding up and down that escalator non stop.

MSN: Cameron Bright Interview

MSN was able to get a few moments with Cameron Bright who plays Alec in New Moon. Cameron probably had one of the easiest commutes to work during the film shooting as he is a Vancouver native.

Is there pressure to kind of come into a movie that’s so big, as a new person?

Well it’s definitely different. Like, I was in “X-Men 3,” right? So that was kind of the same, but that was the last one of it. So I was in the last one, but this one there’s still two more coming. So it’s kind of mixing in and you know, it might give me a chance to finally be recognized and get bigger. Because all my other movies didn’t really have anything going for them until they came out; that was when they got it. Whereas this one already has a huge fan base because of the books and everything.”

Mainstream Media Set Reports: New Moon Filming

To make this easy, as various media outlets come online with their set reports (in other words an overview of their day and the feel they got) I’ll edit this entry and link up the info. Again this way it will be easier to find when people want to find it months from now.

Hollywood.Com Set Visit Timeline

Hollywood.com has a timeline detailing what their set visit was like. (Sneak peak hint, a timeline is the exact style that the Lexicon’s report is done in for our set visit and you will be getting that info really soon). She has everything from arrival impressions, to a not yet seen interview with Melissa Rosenberg listed. Interspersed within the timeline are the previously seen interviews with Michael Sheen, Taylor Lautner, and Wyck Godfrey. So, now you get a sense of what order and context they happened in.  Here’s a bit from the not yet seen Melissa Rosenberg interview:

MR: I’m really enjoying writing Jacob. Jacob’s a great deal of fun to write. Charlie. Particularly writing for that actor Billy Burke. Charlie is someone — Billy Burke is someone — who you just can give a line to, you can give him a deep emotional line or a funny one-liner, and that guy can deliver anything and always brings something new to it. Of course, I love writing the relationship between Bella and Edward — it’s really important.

The biggest challenge:
MR: The biggest challenge is the Bella/Edward, because you’re always writing a line between real intimacy and what’s true versus overly maudlin or melodrama. True romance and true drama — that’s always the line.”

EDITED: Because this whole set up is really kind of overwhelming in its presentation, we are breaking it up into segments that are easier to find.

Hollywood.com: 15 Things About Robert Pattinson

Hollywood.com decided to do something interesting with their New Moon set visit. They broke it down into a list of 15 things that they noticed about Robert Pattinson while there. We loved this one the most:

“2. Like the rest of the cast, Pattinson’s canvas director’s chair had his character’s name (that would be “Edward Cullen”) embroidered on the backrest. On Robert’s chair, however, “Edward Cullen” was covered with yellow tape, on which “ROBERT” was written in bold black marker. Seems our fantasy boy likes to keep things “real.”
