Merry Christmas: A Stephenie Meyer Christmas Story

Christmas

On behalf of the entire staff of the Twilight Lexicon, we wish all our readers Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Three  years ago before everyone knew about Twilight, because it had only been on bookshelves about three months, Stephenie Meyer wrote an article for Ensign Magazine about the spirit of Christmas. It has become the Lexicon’s traditional Christmas post.

A very Happy Birthday and a thank you to Stephenie Meyer for creating this wonderful universe that we love to get lost in.

Happy Birthday Stephenie

May you have a year filled with laughter and love!

The Twilight Saga Makes Lists Galore!

t’s in inevitable that just before Christmas each year top ten lists come out. This year because the decade is turning their are decade lists on top of the yearly lists. We’ve already covered Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner making their MTV Woman/Man of the Year lists, Taylor Lautner being named Moviefone’s Entertainer of the Year, and the Twilight Saga books and Stephenie Meyer being named author of the decade by the Baltimore Sun. Now the actors and the books are hitting several others.

Guinness Book of World Records: “Twilight, which is growing into a massive franchise, received the record for Highest-Grossing Movie by a Female Director – Catherine Hardwicke.”

Amazon.Com: Top selling books and top selling author of the decade.  The books come in at  3. Breaking Dawn , 4. Twilight, 5. Eclipse, 7. New Moon. Stephenie Meyer comes in at number 2.  It’s interesting to note that the DVD of Twilight didn’t make the cut. Given the possibility of three more movies on the horizon, the DVD will probably make the cut next decade.

Time Magazine: People Who Mattered: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. In summing up why they made the list, Time states, “They’re also not generically beautiful. God knows they’re hot enough, but they look interesting too. Intelligent. Slightly askew. You don’t just want to look at them or sleep with them; you want to talk to them. Like the vampire Pattinson plays onscreen, you can see that once upon a time they were merely human, just like us.” They are number 15 on the list. You can vote for Rob and Kristen and voice whether you think as newsmakers they should be considered higher or lower.

The Twilight Saga Meets Bronte and More

A middle school teacher explains how she uses the Twilight Saga to introduce students to classic literature that is referenced in the books. As a fan she and her colleagues were able to connect with the students and then use Twilight to help them reach more mature material.

“Once students found out we were avid fans, they were suddenly staying after class to ask questions about themes and symbols and character development — all skills we were trying to teach in the classroom,” she said. “But kids weren’t interested in the classic works we were reading; they always said they couldn’t relate to those books because they were old, or the vocabulary was too difficult.”

Baker said she and her fellow teachers thought teaching classic literature would be easier if the curriculum included popular books like those in the Twilight series.

“The fact that Stephenie Meyer was a lit major in college and consciously shaped her books around classic literature strengthened the idea because identifying universal themes would help kids understand the more difficult classic works,” she said.

The presentation at the conference was a timely one.

“They scheduled us to present on the day New Moon came out in theaters,” Baker said. “There were about 50 people present at our session and some seemed a little wary about using a series about vampires in the classroom, but overall the response was positive. In fact, two of our former professors, who are our role models as teachers, attended our session and took notes. That meant more to us than anything else.”

Baltimore Sun Pronounces 2000-2009 The Decade of Stephenie Meyer

The Baltimore Sun’s Read Street blog states, “In the coming weeks, we’ll review some of the decade’s biggest books and trends, beginning with this pronouncement: I hereby declare 2000-09 to be the Stephenie Meyer decade… Meyer’s novel “Twilight,” released in October of 2005, hit the top of the best seller lists and has hardly budged since — while being joined by others in the series. Just look at the latest list: Sarah Palin’s on top, but Meyer has the #2, #3, #4 and #7 spots with “New Moon,” “Eclipse,” “Twilight” and “Breaking Dawn.” What could she have done if she hadn’t waited until the decade was half-over to start her series?”

The author of this article seems to be one of the few who realizes that Twilight is very heavily fuled by a plus 21 fanbase. Their upcoming articles should be an interesting read on that basis alone. Check it out on the Baltimore Sun.

Stephenie Meyer Hangs With Muse

Muse Tweeted this photo of lead singer Matthew Bellamy with Stephenie Meyer. Muse is slated to be the featured band on Saturday Night Live next week. TY to ICANBURGER on Twitter for the heads up.

Stephenie Meyer is ALIVE!

Apparently some idiot (who we are going to refrain from giving web traffic to) started the rumor that Stephenie Meyer is dead. She’s alive and well folks.

As for the idiot who started the rumor and the media sources that repeated it without checking it out…you can imagine our thoughts.

EDITED: And in case you doubt us, Stephenie has just called her brother to update her website to that the  same.

Stephenie Meyer Vindicated: Lawsuit Dismissed!

A few months back we covered the story of Jordan Scott (aspiring singer, songwriter, screen writer, model, novelist, actress) who claimed that Stephenie Meyer plagiarized Breaking Dawn from Jordan Scott’s novel The Nocturne.  We posted a case by case analysis as to how (aside from the obvious fact that the texts bore little resemblance to each other) that this was impossible based on copyright dates and other factors.

This was the second story regarding plagiarism in 2009. The first story about Stephenie plagiarizing a college roommate’s story was an Internet hoax completely without merit.

Well it looks like a judge agrees as to what we thought all along about Jordan Scott’s claim. Hachette Books, the parent company of Little Brown that publishes the Twilight Saga novels, released this statement:

“The Honorable Otis D. Wright II of the United States District Court has ruled in favor of Stephenie Meyer and Hachette Book Group and has dismissed with prejudice Jordan Scott’s claim of copyright infringement.

In his ruling, Judge Wright stated that the two works have little in common and that the “characters in the two works are vastly different.” The decision admonishes Scott for “the deceptive presentation of the alleged similarities” and notes that she “has twice manipulated aspects of the subject works in order to create the appearance of similarity.”

While an attempt to ride on someone else’s success may not be surprising, it is encouraging that the courts and the public are not so easily misled.

This judgment confirms what we have known all along – Breaking Dawn is a wholly original work by Stephenie Meyer and this was a frivolous lawsuit brought for the purposes of publicizing the plaintiff’s personal publishing aspirations.  Hachette Book Group and Stephenie Meyer are pleased to be able to put this case behind us.”
