Stephenie Meyer answers your questions

stephIn the mix of all the hype form this weekend, we missed updating you on the Q&A that Stephenie did over at The Twilight Saga official website.

Q: I was wondering what made you choose Italy for the home of the Volturi? Is there a special meaning about Italy in your life or was it a random setting? Thanks :] – Kerry Kowalczyk

Stephenie: I chose Italy because I needed a place with a really long history. Choosing Volterra itself was a strange thing. I wrote the whole Volturi scene before I’d picked a location for it. For the first time, I was planning to create a fictional city, because at this point, I was starting to realize that people were actually going to read this book, and I was nervous about what the real life citizens of Forks would think, and more especially what the real life people of La Push would think—I’d taken some rather big liberties with their fictional history, and I wasn’t sure if they would find it amusing or irritating. So, to avoid similar moments of panic, I decided to set my clan of ancient ruling vampires in a made up place. I was going to call this place “Volturin,” and I knew it needed to be located in Tuscany about an hour or two from Florence—I’d already written the drive from the airport. I’d also already written my descriptions of the plaza and clock tower and Volturi turret. So I pull up a map of Tuscany, trying to decide if Alice should drive north, south, east, or west, and look at that—there is a city named Volterra just about an hour from Florence. So I google image search Volterra, and the very first picture that comes up is the Volterra clock tower. Chills. I called my sister (who’d already read about my fictional Volturin) and told her to go look at Volterra. She freaked, too, because she’d pictured it the same way, too. It was actually a rather creepy moment.

After that, I gave up the idea of creating a fake city and just hoped the people of Volterra did not mind a few vampires. When I went to visit a few years back, all the people I talked to were totally fine with the vampires—what had upset them was the fountain. They don’t have one, and think their square is perfect without it.

Stephenie Meyer On Oprah

This on Stephenie’s Official Website:

“I wanted to apprise you all of a few upcoming things.

You know I’ve been doing the hermit thing this last year, in so far as media is concerned, and I’m not changing that now, but I am making an exception. I’m doing this for a good reason: I am so pleased and amazed and thrilled with what Chris Weitz has done with New Moon that I want to talk about it, and to show my support for him. And since I’m only doing one interview, better make it big. Really big. So….I will be on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Friday, November 13th. Check the local listings on Oprah’s website to find out what time it will be on where you live.

Of course, most of the questions for Oprah will be designed for a broader audience than just die-hard Twilight fans, and I imagine people who read this site and other fansites will already know most of the answers. To rectify this, I’m going to answer your more specific questions on-line. The official Twilight Saga website (www.TheTwilightSaga.com) will be taking any New Moon movie-related questions you might have for me, and then I’ll answer those most frequently asked. I’ll post the answers on the Twilight Saga website and also here on my own site. Questions can be submitted to TheTwilightSaga.com from noon (Eastern Standard Time) on Monday, November 9th through noon Tuesday, November 10th. The answers will be posted Monday, November 16th—or New Moon Premiere Day, as it is known around my house. (Details about submitting the questions will be posted first thing Monday morning at TheTwilightSaga.com, you can also get more information below.)

I’m so very excited that you’ll all get to see New Moon in just two weeks! Then you’ll see what I’m going on about. Until then, think up some good questions for me.

Love,

Steph”

Stephenie Meyer Makes Elle’s Power List

Every year Elle magazine comes up with a Women in Hollywood Power list and they publish the list in their November issue. This year they asked noted Hollywood insider Nikki Finke to create the list for them. This is what Nikki had to say about getting the gig:

Nikki also went on to say that “The trick in Hollywood is not just getting power but keeping it…”

Well, given that Stephenie Meyer is having all of her books turned into movies and is collaboratively working with all the directors on those movies, we’d say she’s met Nikki Finke’s definition. Congratulations, Stephenie!

Stephenie Meyer On The Host Being Optioned For Film

Stephenie Meyer just updated her website to say,

“I’m so excited to be working with Nick Weschler, and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz to bring The Host to a visual format. They’ve all been a dream to work with, so lovely and collaborative, and I feel like we’re in a really good place to make a great movie together. And then to have Andrew Niccol writing and directing? Truly awesome. If you’ve never seen Gattaca, go watch it now. One of my favorite movies of all time. It’s such a great example of character driven science fiction, which is ideal for The Host, no? I’m having an absolute blast imagining different dream casts, which I would post if people didn’t take my silly blogs so seriously these days. I’m looking forward to seeing the cast lists you come up with in the fansite forums, and if any of them match mine.

So, very exciting. Yay Host!

XO
Steph”

100 Monkeys Take Vancouver By Storm

100 Monkeys had a great show up in Vancouver this weekend by all accounts.

Vancity Allie described the show as, “I thought they did a nice job with the stage setup and the lighting. Shadows, vibrant coloured lighting, and tall dark angular shapes danced across a back screen as the band played to hundreds of photo flashes going off every minute for the duration of the show.”

She shot video of one the the standard part of the group’s act which is to make up a song on the spot using a word suggested by the audience. The word that night was acorn.

100 Monkeys and Jackson Rathbone Perform at the Rickshaw Theatre from VancityAllie on Vimeo.

Mandy was also at the concert and described it as, “100 Monkeys are amazing performers and rumour is they will have another show in Vancouver announced VERY soon :)”

She also met the band at a signing event the following day that has an amusing story and video to go with it.

Mandy also was able to meet Stephenie Meyer, who was at the concert. You can see her encounter here.

Don’t Be Fooled By Fake Midnight Sun!

This just posted on Stephenie Meyer’s official website:

“Hi. I hope everyone is having a great week.

It has come to my attention through several concerned emails that many popular websites like MySpace and Facebook are displaying ads offering a chance to win Midnight Sun. This is a hoax. I would advise against giving out any personal information or even clicking on the links.”

Also, we are getting emails about this website that claims to “be in the know” about Breaking Dawn casting. People want to know if the information is correct. Among other things the site states that, “No part of this blog may be reproduced, posted, or redistributed in any form or by any means electronic or mechanical including photocopy or recording or any information storage or retrieval system without the permission in writing from the publisher.” (Actually under Fair Use laws you can quote brief sections with attribution like we have done here.)  We’re finding it interesting that their information on Breaking Dawn is copied word-for-word without credit or citation from the Breaking Dawn section on Wikipedia. The site also lists that Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel will be in Breaking Dawn while leaving out the names of several Cullens. The same site three weeks ago was listing that the movie would be in three parts. Like we said, use your own common sense here folks.

Stephenie Meyer in Vainity Fair Influential 100

Stephenie Meyer has made the list of Vanity Fair magazine’s “The New Establishment 2009” in the number 82 position.  It’s basically a list of what you could call the movers and shakers of the past year.

STAGE OF GLOBAL CONQUEST: The Mormon housewife’s Twilight teen-vampire romance novels sold nearly 29 million copies in one year, capturing the top four positions on the USA Today best-seller list for 2008, making her the first author ever to do so. (J. K. Rowling came close with Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 5 with her Harry Potter titles in 2000.) The movie version of Twilight grossed $191 million in the U.S., and the film adaptation of her second book, New Moon, opens in November. Meyer has also inspired hundreds of Web sites from fans who call themselves “Stephen-ites” or “Twi-hards.”?”

So congrats Stephenie, and anyone ever referred to themself or heard her fans referred to as “Stephen-ites” before? That term is a new one on us.
