Wuthering Heights a Bestseller Again Due to Eclipse

Awhile back we reported that the covers of the Emily Bronte novel were being redone to give them a more modern feel. Additionally references to Eclipse were on the cover, pointing out that the novel was one read by Bella.

Stephenie Meyer has made no secret of the fact that she was a voracious reader. She used to go through a book a week. When asked on The Host Tour what were some of the negatives she was experiencing with her new-found fame, part of her answer was that she no longer had the time to read the way that used to.

Stephenie has featured classic literature and plays in each of her novels by either referencing them directly in the storyline by having Bella and Edward reading them for a class assignment, or by talking about them in book tours, such as Pride and Prejudice, having influenced character interaction.

Well according to the UK paper, The Telegraph, Wuthering Heights, largely due to a Twilight Saga influence, has now topped the classic bestseller chart for the first time since records were kept.

“It [Wuthering Heights] has sold more than 10,000 copies in Waterstone’s booksellers stores since May, more than twice as many as the traditional Penguin Classics edition (see cover comparison to the left).

A spokesman for the chain said it was the first time Wuthering Heights had topped its classic books chart since it started compiling such figures in 1998. It has been number one in the classics chart for four months.

Simon Robertson, the company’s classics buyer, said: “I don’t think a vampire’s recommendation has ever sent a book to number one before.”

Here are the books referenced by Stephenie Meyer:

-Twilight: Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

-New Moon: Romeo and Juliet

-Eclipse: Wuthering Heights

Breaking Dawn: The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummers Night Dream

Twilight Yearbook: Stephenie Meyer and More

What The Forks has found a series of photos that features Twilight names in their yearbook photos.

Teens of the late 1990’s-early 2000’s: Kellan Lutz has a bit of the 90210 (the original series) hair going on, while Ashley Greene seems to have mastered the flat iron.

Teens of the late 1980’s-early 1990’s: Stephenie Meyer has remarkably tame hair given the period. Those 1980’s bangs are there though.

Stephenie Meyer’s Musical Tastes

It looks like New York Magazine has just figured out what Stephenie Meyer’s musical tastes are.  Up until now it looks like they couldn’t get past the stereotype of what a teen romance novelist should have on her IPOD.

“If you would’ve asked us before today what kind of music we thought Stephenie Meyer listened to, we probably would’ve said something like Evanescence, Lifehouse, or maybe even early-period Donnie & Marie Osmond. However, we would’ve been totally wrong! Her iPod playlist includes the likes of Animal Collective, the Silversun Pickups, and the Dead Weather.”

It got us thinking as to how “perceived image” is no indication of musical taste. Another good example is author J.R. Ward who self-described “I look like I should be listening to Mozart”  in actuality is a huge gangsta rap fan among other genres.  So, do you break the mold on your IPOD tastes?

Stephenie Meyer Partners with Hobo

Back a couple of moths ago, we first heard of the Hobo skatebboard company when they created a one-of-a-kind skateboard to auction off for the Save The Book Babe event. ( Side note Pel just had coffee with Faith AKA the Book Babe this weekend and she’s hanging in there, and she has plans for the future.) Well now it seems that the group is expanding their partnership with Stephenie Meyer.

“They started the Hobo Foundation simultaneously with the business. They will give a portion of their profits, when they get some, to the foundation, which will partner with local charities that benefit the homeless. The two briefly considered whether “hobo” might be considered politically incorrect, but they decided the term fit their mission and would appeal to the young people in their target customer base. The company motto is “We share the same streets.”

The charity aspect was a key draw for Meyer, Hancock said. Meyer, who also lives in Cave Creek and is a family friend of Hancock’s, invited him to design a one-of-a-kind skateboard for a cancer-charity auction she was hosting in the spring. The deck sold for $1,500, and she was so impressed that she approached the two men about partnering on a line of gear.

“She knew that by doing that deck for the charity event, people saw Hobo as a company tied to a social cause,” Hancock said.”

Stephenie Meyer: My Summer Vacation

Stephenie Meyer has updated her website to say how she spent her summer vacation. She has a list of some great book and song recommendations. and ended with this quote:

“And finally movies. Mostly when I get out to a movie, it’s a kid’s movie. So Pixar’s Up was the highlight of my summer. And then this Saturday I went to see an actual grown-up people movie, yay! Admittedly, I went to see the New Moon trailer on the big screen (yes, I’m a total dork. Who cares? It was worth it). But then I stayed to see Bandslam because the reviews were so good, and I was glad I did. With my hopeless love of music coupled with my total lack of musical ability, I really dug Will. He’s my hero right now. It had a good soundtrack, as one might expect, a lot of very quotable one-liners, and it turned upside down some of those lame female-interaction stereotypes. It’s a good time.

So that’s my “How I Spent My Summer.” I hope you guys had a really good time this summer, and found some great stuff of your own. I love this world full of stories and songs waiting to be discovered! And I also love you, the awesome Twilight (and maybe a few Hosts, too) fandom. I stalk your websites all the time—you guys are hilarious (I recently added LTT to my stalk list; thanks for the laugh lines, ladies). I’m looking forward to seeing some of you in November for a little movie release that I’m excited about. Too many months to go!”

Meet The Man Who Signed Off On Twilight

Amanda Bell, the Twilight Examiner, has a great article that features former head of Warner Books, Larry Kirschbaum. Back when the contracts for Twilight were being drawn up, Little Brown was then owned by the Time Warner Book Group. Shortly after Twilight’s release in print, Little Brown was acquired by Hachette. Hachette still currently owns Little Brown.

The key place that you want to look in this video that details the ins and out of the publishing business is the 2:10 mark.

Stephenie Meyer’s Claim Supported: AKA Copyright 101

First let us start out by saying that we are completely biased here. We have been online as a Stephenie Meyer fansite since March 2006. And because of our relationship built over three years with Stephenie Meyer, we have no reason to doubt her word. So when the story first broke today on TMZ, we decided to do several things:

1. We looked at the version of the book in question that is available online
2. We asked Little Brown the publishing company for an official response
3. We started to research Ms. Scott herself

So we wrote up our preliminary findings here. Now what we found particularly interesting is that the attorney involved then decided to give a follow up to MTV. That’s right, MTV.  It’s a unique tactic first TMZ now MTV. Could it be that he has something for initials, or is it possibly that those sites generally have a target audience that mirrors the demographic Ms. Scott’s novel and career are directed towards? Oh heck, maybe it’s just sheer coincidence.
As many of you know, much of Breaking Dawn came from Stephenie’s first sequel she wrote to Twilight called Forever Dawn. In fact, Alphie got to read this book back in February of 2006 and stands by what Stephenie says on her website.

The basic story [between Forever Dawn and Breaking Dawn] is the same. Bella and Edward get married and go to Isle Esme for their honeymoon. Bella gets pregnant with Renesmee. The birth just about kills Bella, but Edward makes her a vampire in time. Jacob imprints on Renesmee. Alice has a vision of the Volturi coming to destroy the Cullens with the “immortal child” as their excuse. Alice bails. Bella’s shielding abilities turn the tide in the Cullen’s favor, along with Alice bringing home another half-vampire to prove that Nessie isn’t a danger.”

We decided to do some more research. We wanted to see for ourselves when Ms. Scott actually copyrighted her book.  Well we got a whole lot more than we bargained for. We not only looked up Ms. Scott, but Stephenie Meyer as well. We were after the date that Twilight was copyrighted. Little did we know that not only was Twilight copyrighted, but so is Forever Dawn. This was news to us.

The following information is readily viewable to anyone doing a simple site search at the copyright office. If anyone had thought to try this a year ago they would have had a hell of a spoiler in the name of the Application Title. additionally Stephenie has stated in various interviews and as  reflected in her “craptstic covers” that she originally toyed around with publishing under a pen name that included her maiden name of Morgan. You can see that name reflected in the registration as well.

Now when one looks up Ms. Scott’s work what is discovered is that nothing was legally filed until AFTER, Breaking Dawn was published. Now the work itself (though not filed for copyright) was online starting in 2006 which is a full two years after Stephenie Meyer filed her Forever Dawn manuscript:

Breaking Dawn Plagerism Claim Disputed

Today various gossip sites published a story that an author named Jordan Scott is accusing Stephenie Meyer of plagiarizing Breaking Dawn. A quick Google search reveals Ms. Scott’s website and her modeling aspirations.

Ms Scott’s bio states:

As a musician and singer, I have worked in the entertainment industry since I can remember, but I became serious about my writing when I graduated high school at age 14.

When I was 15 I began writing The Nocturne Trilogy, after I took some time away from writing music and working in film and television. I wanted to write a character-driven story with characters who seem to “live and breathe” on the pages. I wrote The Nocturne with the intent of bringing readers into a completely new world of the fantasy and romance genres. And now I have completed it, after more than three years of intense research, character development, writing, rewriting, editing, and writing a little more! I hope you guys enjoy it.

I commenced studies in a Harvard University Psychology program when I was 17, after which I wanted to major in Film and Theater, and transferred to UCLA. So these days I divide my time between music, college, and writing.

I have an award winning script, and three other scripts in various stages.  Wow

I love school, writing, music, and of course Boys.

In response, Stephenie Meyer’s representatives have released the following, unedited statement:

“The claim that Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer somehow infringes on an alleged book by someone named Jordan Scott is completely without merit.  Neither Stephenie Meyer nor her representatives had any knowledge of this writer or her supposed book prior to this claim.  Ms. Scott’s attorney has yet to furnish us with a copy of the book to support this claim as requested.  The world of The Twilight Saga and the stories within it are entirely the creation of Ms. Meyer.  Her books have been a phenomenal sensation, and perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that other people may seek to ride the coattails of such success. This claim is frivolous and any lawsuit will be defended vigorously.”

Loose fantasy ideas are not copyrightable, otherwise all vampire fiction would have stopped at Bram Stoker. Neither are loose romance plots copyrightable, or Harlequin would not be a leader in romance.  Part of the book in question is viewable on Ms Scott’s website as a Google document. Upon examination, in our clearly biased and in our non legal opinion, the type of word-for-word lifting and exact modeling of character and circumstance that need to be present for a copyright case to have merit is simply not there.

The Twilight Saga Breaks a USA Today Record

We’ve often said that the only way in which the Twilight novels and Harry Potter novels can be compared is the fact that they were books directed at younger audiences, written by previously unpublished women, they have tremendous sales totals, and they have fanatic fan followings. In fact we just turned down participating in an webevent that wanted a faceoff to determine which was better, because it’s not a contest. Reading, in our opinion, shouldn’t be a contest. Especially since the books are differnt genres, it would be like asking what’s better a cubist Picasso or an impressionist Monet.

USA Today just announced that the Twilight Saga broke a record previously held by Harry Potter. So you can see how the sales total comparison is an interesting one.

According to USA Today:

“The four-book Twilight series has sunk its fangs into USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list — with no signs of letting go. Meyer’s domination of the list for the past 12 months has smashed records that until now had belonged to J.K. Rowling.

Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the teen-vampire romance series, entered the list at No. 1 on Aug. 2, 2008. Its sales and those of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, the first three books, have remained staggering.

This week, Meyer’s novels are Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 on USA TODAY’s list.

Rowling, overall, has sold more books than Meyer — her seven-book series about boy wizard Harry Potter has 143 million copies in print in the USA, while Meyer has sold 40 million copies of her four books. But Rowling can’t match Meyer’s control of the list.”

Check out the whole story on USA Today. It doesn’t take sides in which novels are better, but it provides an interesting insight into their respective sales patterns and histories.

It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s Stephenie Meyer!

Stephenie Meyer has always said just how much she likes comic book superheroes like the X-men. Well, now she gets to be a bit of a comic book hero herself.

“Bluewater Productions, which has been churning out one political biography after another, is now turning its attention to Twilight author Stephenie Meyer.

The comic will be released in October under the company’s “Female Force” banner, which has been home to biographies on such public figures as Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Sarah Palin and Princess Diana.

“We chose Stephenie Meyer to be one of the subjects for Female Force because her voice is one for a new generation,” Bluewater Publisher Darren G. Davis tells Diamond’s PreviewsWorld. “Now people will find out the history of how she created this series, as well as her life story.”
