Stephenie Meyer to Produce Shannon Hale’s Austenland Movie

According to the Hollywood Reporter:

“Keri Russell, JJ Field and Bret McKenzie will star in Austenland, an indie romantic comedy that is serving as the directorial debut of Jerusha Hess, who co-wrote Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre with her husband, helmer Jared Hess.

In a twist, the movie is also serving as the producing debut of Stephenie Meyer, author of the best-selling vampire books The Twilight Saga.[Lexicon Note: This should perhaps read her first time producing with her own company as she is a producer on Breaking Dawn]

Meyer is producing and financing the pic though her Fickle Fish Films banner, which she runs with Meghan Hibbett. Moxie Pictures’ Gina Mingacci is also producing.

For those of you are are unfamiliar with Austenland, it marked the first time that children’s author Shannon Hale (of the Princess Academy fame) attempted an adult novel. Shannon Hale and Stephenie Myer have been friends for some time. Shannon did the Q&A with Stephenie that appears in the front of The Twilight Saga Official Illustrated Guide. She also took part in The Book Babe charity event with Stephenie. There is also a shout out to Shannon Hale in the Bree tanner novella where Bree reading her way through the bookshop had left off at Shannon Hale.

The basic premise of the book is that a young woman who is disillusioned by modern romance and dating inherits the chance to visit Austenland. Austenland is like a theme park for adult women where they can live out their own Pride and Prejudice type fantasy a la Fantasy Island (only without Mr. Roarke and Tatoo).

You can follow Shannon Hale on Twitter here and visit her blog here.

Edited: Shannon Hale commented on her blog:

“What I’ve done today:

  1. Done 3 loads of laundry
  2. Changed 6 diapers
  3. Dropped off and picked up preschooler
  4. Played games with my 7 yo
  5. Called insurance company to see why one of my twin babies mysteriously isn’t covered on our insurance
  6. Read about my book becoming a movie on The Hollywood Reporter
  7. Freaked out!

It’s happening! So much more news to come. I am at least freed to talk about. This has been in the works for two years and it’s so exciting! More soon.

Ps. Notice how THR doesn’t mention me or my book? Oh Hollywood, you just couldn’t love writers any more, could you?”

Fandom Flashback: The Stephenie Meyer Book Signing

I was introduced to Twilight by a friend of mine from church in January of 2006. Like so many of you who fell in love with the story, I went on line to look for other people who liked the story that I could talk to. There wasn’t much to find at the time. What I did find was that Stephenie Meyer had her own website full of pictures of her trip to Forks with her sister, a few outtakes from the book, and some information on what had happened at a few of her book signings. The way she described it, before the actual signing she met with about 10 – 15 fans and just sat and chatted about Edward and the story in what she called an “I Love Edward Cullen” party. I was jealous. I wanted to go to one of those! Unfortunately, these were all held in October – December of 2005 just after the book released and were mostly out west in Utah and Arizona where Stephenie was from. Still, once I leaned there would be sequels to the series I was determined to someday be at a book signing and gush with Stephenie about how much I had fallen for the character of Edward Cullen.

Stephenie Meyer Makes Forbes Powerful Women Authors List

Forbes Magazine which has previously included Stephenie Meyer in other power rankings, has just included her in the number four position on their Powerful Women Authors list.

“The women selected for this list are powerful because of their ability to influence us through their words and ideas. Collectively, these women hold readers captivated with stories of fantastical worlds, suspense and drama, insights into the complexities of minority experiences and cultures, and fresh takes on societal issues and expectations…not to mention, book sales of up to 800M copies sold and a wealth of prestigious awards and recognition including Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes.

In other words, these 10 women can tell (and sell) a good story.

Although there are many more women throughout history who have proven to be powerful authors, this list is limited to those who are living, with a focus on personal narrative and fiction writers.”

Twilight and the Enduring Draw of YA Fiction

The Atlantic has just launched a four-part series on the rise of YA fiction over the last decade. In today’s installment they talk about the impact of Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Ender’s Game on the genre.

“In a world of niche marketing, mass entertainment phenomena are rarer and rarer. But in the last decade, fans of all ages have flocked repeatedly to series aimed at young adults. Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy may be popular, but Lisbeth Salander can’t hold a candle to Harry Potter: The traumatized Scandanavian hacker’s sold 27 million novels to the British boy wizard’s 400 million. Bella Swan, the moody teen who takes up with a vampire, has propelled Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series to 116 million book sales. Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy hasn’t quite broken into that upper echelon, but the movie adaptation has attracted such buzz that it’s finally propelled forward a long-stalled film version of Orson Scott Card’s 1985 YA science-fiction classic Ender’s Game. Marie Lu’s novel Legend hasn’t even been published yet, but the producers behind the Twilight movie adaptations are already shepherding it towards the big screen.”

The Host Making Waves at Cannes

TheHostPBAccording to Variety:

“Inferno Entertainment has nearly pre-sold all international territories for Stephenie Meyer’s pic “The Host,” one of the hot titles at this year’s Cannes market.

Pic, helmed by Andrew Niccol (who also adapted the screenplay of Meyer’s tome), is produced by Paula Mae Schwartz, Steve Schwartz, Nick Wechsler and Meyer while Inferno’s Marc Butan, Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson are exec-producers. Roger Schwartz serves as co-producer.

Producers are financing the pic with Inferno, which kicked off sales with a bang in Cannes last week. Meyer descended upon the Croisette to meet with buyers. The efforts proved worthwhile as pic had bidding wars in multiple territories all keen to get their hands on the next project from the woman behind the “Twilight” cash cow.

Pic is eyeing a January start date.”

Stephenie Meyer to Attend Cannes Film Festival to Promote The Host

Deadline New York ( which is usually very reliable) has the scoop:

“Saoirse Ronan has been set to star in The Host, the screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer. Scripted by Andrew Niccol, the film figures to be one of the hot titles when Inferno launches sales at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival next week. Niccol, who was originally set to direct, might resurface as the filmmaker…

The concept is more of a visual challenge than Meyer’s Twilight Saga books, but one thing they plan is for Ronan to play both Melanie and Wanderer…

Niccol wrote the script to direct, but left to direct Now with Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy. Nanny McPhee Returns director Susanna White was briefly attached, but that isn’t happening. Niccol, now done with his film, is once again in the mix as possible helmer. Inferno’s Marc Butan, Jim Seibel, Bill Johnson are exec producing and Roger Schwartz is co-producer. The film’s being funded by the producers and Inferno.”

So what do you think of Saoirse Ronan being in The Host, and for the million dollar question, Melanie/Wanderer, and exactly HOW are they going to do that? This is a really interesting turn of events because Saoirse Ronan literally just lost out on another major movie role: Katniss in The Hunger Games. That role went to Jennifer Lawrence amidst much fan controversy.

Eden Relates Her Experience Meeting Stephenie Meyer

We reported about a week ago how Eden from Florida was the American winner of the meet Stephenie Meyer opportunity run by Little Brown. You can now see Eden’s report on the Twilight Saga website:

“My experience with Stephenie Meyer and the other international winners was more than amazing, it was priceless. Meeting people from around the world that love the Twilight Saga as much as I do has been an eye-opening experience. I have made life long friends with the other winners. We will always be able to discuss Twilight on a different level because of this fabulous opportunity afforded to us. Coming together and experiencing the amazing Stephenie Meyer is something that we experienced as a group. I will never forget the ten other winners and their guests. I have made life long friends with all of them. Many of these memories were shared with the one person that made all of this possible, Stephenie Meyer! I do not have enough words to describe how much of a wonderful, warmhearted person Stephenie is, plus she is the author of some of my favorite books!”
