USA Today Covers the International Fan Winners and Stephenie Meyer

The winners of the international meet Stephenie Meyer contest met with her over the weekend and USA Today was there.  They discussed the books and movies and more. This is one of those DON’T MISS IT articles folks! Read it all!

Some highlights:

•On the illustrated guide: “My favorite part is the vampire histories. There’s a lot there that’s new. Alice’s (Cullen) back story is one no one has known until now. And I think fans will be surprised at how much fun (Cullen nemesis) Victoria’s story is.”

•On whether she’ll ever write more books about Edward and Bella: “The story’s already been told, and I doubt I’ll ever write another series based on the same characters.”

•On the possibility she’d ever finish Midnight Sun, a Twilight novel told from Edward’s viewpoint that she nixed when parts of it were leaked online in 2008: “I’m hoping to do it someday because I know that’s what people want. No matter what book I put out from here to eternity they’ll want Midnight Sun, but I’m just not writing about vampires right now.

Some mysteries remain
One question she won’t answer: whether the werewolf/shape shifter Jacob and Renesmee, the human/vampire hybrid child of Edward and Bella, could ever have children. (Jacob is a teenager, but baby Renesmee is aging at an accelerated rate.) “That is a question I’m reserving the right not to answer, because there is a chance I’ll go back to their story.”

USA Today Talks with Stephenie Meyer About Upcoming Projects

USA Today has a teaser for a story that will hit the web on Thursday about Stephenie Meyer’s next project.  The article promises to deliver comments from Stephenie about the various members of the cast of The Twilight saga as well as “the creatures – some watery, some dark – she hopes to write about next.”  For those of you who have asked us and asked us and ASKED US about Stephenie’s next book, it looks like this will be your confirming answer.  In the past die hard fans have heard Stephenie mention the possibility of a mermaid book as well as a ghost story, which seems to fit the watery and dark components mentioned in the article.  We at the Lexicon hope there is some mention of a sequel to “The Host” as well.

As a teaser piece, this article didn’t deliver too much information.  Yet it still gave us some insight to Kristen Stewarts performance in Breaking Dawn.  Stephenie had this to say about Kristen’s transformation from human into vampire.

“She’s created a new character. I was really impressed.  I’ve only really seen her as (the human) Bella so to have her step up and change it in the right way — she didn’t have to talk to me. She knew. She knows the character so well now. She has really good instincts and, she looks amazing.”

Read the teaser over at USA Today and check back tomorrow for the full story.  Let us know your thoughts and hopes on what Stephenie writes next in the comments.

Stephenie Meyer Nominated as Children’s Author of the Year

Stephenie Meyer has been nominated as Children’s Author of the Year based on her book The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. You can see from the above graphic that she faces stiff competition from her fellow nominees.  You can vote over on Children’s Book Week.

Stephenie was previously recognized by this group in 2009 for her work on Breaking Dawn. The awards were established in 2008.

EDITED: Please note that just like the New York Times and many other best seller lists, they do not have a list for YA books. They lump everything from Pat the Bunny to YA novels racier than Twilight in the wide-sweeping children’s books category. Both the Hunger Games and The Mortal Instruments series also contain mature elements.  When they make these lists they are more or less looking at grade 6 through high school.

Has Twilight Revamped the Vampire?

breaking_dawncoverThere’s a super article up on how Twilight changed the way we now look at vampires.

“Sparkling bodies aside, when Twilight came out, vampires were starting to be seen as something other than evil. They were tortured souls that didn’t ask for their fates. They were human beings that happened to be dead. They had feelings, loved ones, and a desire to be human again. Stephenie Meyer crossed a line that was never crossed before, if it was, it didn’t have the same impact as her story had. For the first time, a human fell in love with a monster… a conceptual Beauty and the Beast story, except this time the beast stays a beast. Bella had to learn to love Edward, though it wasn’t hard, and had to except him for the undead being that he was. In the same token, Edward had to take every bit of strength he had not to kill her.

Along with putting vampires in a better light, Twilight also paid homage to the werewolf, shape-shifter actually, showing that they were aggressive but very protective of family, friends, loved ones, and members of their tribe. Though werewolves could practically match the strengths of a vampire and could actually kill them, Twilight brought the two together by spinning a tale of love that was strong enough for them to risk their lives and work together.”

There’s some really good though here. Check it out on Suite 101

Twilight Novels Rank Among the Most Borrowed in the UK in 2010

According to The Guardian, the first four books in the Twilight Saga were among the 100 most borrowed library books in England in 2010. They decided to analyze why Twilight Saga books and others that made the list are so popular. Interesting concept, even if they seem slightly off in their Twilight description as being laced with crime.

“Trying to explain why the wartime British public were turning to “brutal and sordid” American crime novels, George Orwell suggested that pulp fiction offered “a distilled version of the modern political scene” in an era of “mass bombing of civilians, the use of hostages, torture [and] secret prisons”, and “systematic falsification of records and statistics”. The average man, he proposed, “wants the current troubles of the world to be translated into a simple story about individuals”.

Some such theory is needed, 65 years later, to account for the stunning appetite for evil evinced by people popping into their local libraries, as revealed again by the latest data released by Public Lending Right (PLR), covering the period from mid-2009 to mid-2010. Of the 100 most borrowed titles, close to two-thirds are crime novels or thrillers, including all the top 10, and others (such as Stephenie Meyer‘s crime-laden vampire romances) are in related genres.”

Photo: Filming Continues in Baton Rogue and Rachel St.Gelais Confirmed as a Duplicate Renesmee

Over on Twitter Saints Nurse managed to capture the actors as they moved from building to building. You can clearly see Robert Pattinson, Stephenie Meyer, Kellan Lutz, and producer Wyck Godfrey in the photo. We cropped the photo and blew it up so you’re not looking through the iron bars so much. There are also two, bright silver Volvo SUVs in the parking lot in some of the shots that some are speculating might be Edward’s car this time out. When we first saw the photos, we commented on Twitter,”Ah I can it’s time for the inmates to take their daily recreational walk at Stalag 17″. It’s a bit like playing where’s Waldo behind bars. See more photos on SaintsNurse’s Twitter

Also Rachel St. Gelais (who we first reported out here) is confirmed as being a part of the production. We are assuming she is a younger version of Renesmee. She apparently had a good time filming according to her Twitter. She chatted back and forth on Twitter with Erik Odom and Valorie Curry who play Peter and Charlotte.  You can follow her on Twitter here. The Twitter is run by her parents.

Stephenie Meyer’s Jane Austen Love Helps to Inspire Another Book

We told you about two weeks ago about Elizabeth Eulberg’s novel, Prom and Prejudice. Elizabeth is Stephenie Meyer’s publicist. Entertainment Weekly just did an interview with Elizabeth and she talks about how her book was partially inspired by Stephenie Meyer.

“In your acknowledgments you thank Stephenie Meyer for a conversation that sparked your idea for the book. What was said?

We were on tour and talking about Pride & Prejudice and the different ways it’s influenced current pop culture—from Bridget Jones’s Diary to the Bollywood movie Bride & Prejudice. And I started thinking to myself, Could it be retold from a teen point of view? Pride & Prejudice is all about the Bennett sisters trying to find a husband but I didn’t want it to be about girls in high school trying to find a boyfriend. So I was like “What do girls and boys do in high school?” And then all of the sudden the title Prom & Prejudice came to mind and I said it aloud and Stephenie was like ‘Ooh, that’s really good!”
