The Host Will Be A Three Movie Series

Screenwriter and director of The Host, Andrew Niccol, talked to his hometown paper the New Zealand Herald about his current project , In Time, and his next one, The Host.

His next project will be as director and writer of The Host, adapting the best-selling novel by Twilight author Stephanie Meyer about aliens inhabiting human life forms.

“It’s a liberating feeling that I’ll be directing something I haven’t had to make up. It’ll be fun. But I have to say, Stephanie gave me her 650-page book to adapt. That’s a workout to start with but I’ve managed to get it down to a script and there are two more movies coming after the initial movie,” he says. Clearly, he enjoys a challenge. “Well, yes. At first I thought, ‘this is going to be impossible’.”

Stephenie Meyer has always said that she envisioned The Host as a trilogy: The Host, The Seeker, The Soul

The Host Making Waves at Cannes

TheHostPBAccording to Variety:

“Inferno Entertainment has nearly pre-sold all international territories for Stephenie Meyer’s pic “The Host,” one of the hot titles at this year’s Cannes market.

Pic, helmed by Andrew Niccol (who also adapted the screenplay of Meyer’s tome), is produced by Paula Mae Schwartz, Steve Schwartz, Nick Wechsler and Meyer while Inferno’s Marc Butan, Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson are exec-producers. Roger Schwartz serves as co-producer.

Producers are financing the pic with Inferno, which kicked off sales with a bang in Cannes last week. Meyer descended upon the Croisette to meet with buyers. The efforts proved worthwhile as pic had bidding wars in multiple territories all keen to get their hands on the next project from the woman behind the “Twilight” cash cow.

Pic is eyeing a January start date.”

Andrew Niccol Reconfirmed as the Director of The Host

According to Deadline New York, Andrew Niccol is now back on board as the director of The Host. This is no longer the rumor of last week, it is confirmation with quotes from Inferno Entertainment, the group making the film:

“Andrew Niccol has been set as the director of The Host, directing his scripted adaptation of the bestselling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer. The project, which is being shopped here at Cannes by Inferno Entertainment and producers Nick Wechsler and Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz, will star Saoirse Ronan.”

See more on Deadline New York.

You may remember that Andrew Niccol originally penned the script and was set to direct. Then due to various issues he dropped out and Susanna White was brought on board. However it’s now back to Andrew Niccol.

Inferno Entertainment, the group making the film, issued the following statement at the Cannes Film Festival:

“Having Andrew at the helm for us is incredibly invigorating as he truly shares Stephenie’s vision on this film,” said Kimberly Fox, Inferno’s President of International Sales. “We literally began sales this week and the response from the international community, and from domestic buyers, has been beyond our highest expectations. We expect to have every territory in the world sold out very shortly, and then it’s about getting to the exciting part of making the movie.”

The group is at Cannes to hopefully find a studio to back the project.

Saoirse Ronan: Action Star Experience

Considering what Melanie/Wanderer has to do physically in The Host, Saoirse Ronan definitely has done physically demanding roles. Lots of people know her from Atonement and The Lovely Bones, but she’s also currently starring in Hanna.

Stephenie Meyer to Attend Cannes Film Festival to Promote The Host

Deadline New York ( which is usually very reliable) has the scoop:

“Saoirse Ronan has been set to star in The Host, the screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer. Scripted by Andrew Niccol, the film figures to be one of the hot titles when Inferno launches sales at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival next week. Niccol, who was originally set to direct, might resurface as the filmmaker…

The concept is more of a visual challenge than Meyer’s Twilight Saga books, but one thing they plan is for Ronan to play both Melanie and Wanderer…

Niccol wrote the script to direct, but left to direct Now with Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy. Nanny McPhee Returns director Susanna White was briefly attached, but that isn’t happening. Niccol, now done with his film, is once again in the mix as possible helmer. Inferno’s Marc Butan, Jim Seibel, Bill Johnson are exec producing and Roger Schwartz is co-producer. The film’s being funded by the producers and Inferno.”

So what do you think of Saoirse Ronan being in The Host, and for the million dollar question, Melanie/Wanderer, and exactly HOW are they going to do that? This is a really interesting turn of events because Saoirse Ronan literally just lost out on another major movie role: Katniss in The Hunger Games. That role went to Jennifer Lawrence amidst much fan controversy.

Susanna White, Director of The Host, Part of Young Filmaker Training

According to the BBC press release below, Susanna White, who was recently announced as the new director of The Host, is part of an exciting initiative that the BBC is sponsoring hoping to inspire and assist young film makers.  We are also currently working on our our website for The Host. You can find it here. It’s a work in progress.

The College of Production website, bbc.co.uk/collegeofproduction, part of the BBC Academy, goes live on 21 February 2011. The first of its kind for the production community in the UK, the website provides practical advice on all aspects of TV, radio and online production and will be available to the production community and general public for free.

It is hoped that the website will become a valuable asset not only for training BBC staff, but an authoritative and useful resource for the wider broadcasting industry, for people seeking to enter the industry and for other interested audiences.

More than 1.4 million learners studied on Skillset-recognised media courses in the UK in 2008/9* and over half a million people were employed in the Creative Media Industry** – a massive number of potential users for the site.

Like the College of Journalism website***, the College of Production website will also be freely available in the UK and will play an important role in helping the BBC Academy deliver its remit, under the terms of the BBC’s Charter Agreement, to train the wider industry.

The Best Made Easy

“The best made easy” is the premise behind the creation of the site, says Amanda Lyon, the launch editor. “Through filmed talks, short radio programmes and videos, broadcasting innovators, creatives and experts will freely share their experience with the production community in a distilled and focused form.”

A host of the top names in broadcast have contributed to the site: Gary Lineker talks about the Match Of The Day production team; Chris Evans enthuses about his relationship with exec producer Helen Thomas and how this gives his show its energy; while Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie share their hottest tip, “Never look puzzled through the glass!”

The site offers content on all areas of TV and radio production. And each video or short radio programme aims to answer a single question – simply and usefully. Short VTs provide practical advice on a vast array of subjects from health and safety to self shooting, editing and interviewing. Short radio programmes feature experts in conversation on single topics, such as how blogs can be used to add value to programme content.

Experts representing a broad spectrum of jobs and skills in radio, TV and online production, both from within the BBC and from the wider broadcast industry, will be invited to share their knowledge and expertise. For example, production staff working on some of the BBC’s best-loved flagship shows including Strictly Come Dancing, Doctor Who, Lambing Live, Bang Goes The Theory, Waking The Dead, Casualty, The Weakest Link, Woman’s Hour, Match Of The Day and The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, describe their roles and first-hand experiences.

There are tips on writing popular drama from Diederick Santer, former executive producer of EastEnders; Adam Tandy, producer of The Thick Of It, talks on what makes a successful comedy and Jenni Murray reveals what she looks for in a briefing (not a thesis!).

College of Production talks, filmed in front of a live studio audience, feature leading figures from the broadcast and creative industries, who share their experience and passion. On the site from launch are talks with producer John Lloyd and documentary-maker-turned-film-director Susanna White, Pat Younge, Chief Creative Officer BBC Vision Productions and Brighton Rock director Rowan Joffe.

There are currently around 100 VTs on the site and, throughout 2011, Amanda and her team will continue to grow the website, in consultation with users and key stakeholders. There will be around 300 items on the site by the end of the year.

“There is huge demand across the industry for this kind of innovative training resource”, says Anne Morrison, Director of the BBC Academy. “At the BBC we are taking a lead in this area to help reach as wide an audience as possible. The BBC relies on an increasingly mobile workforce, with many freelancers or people working on short term contracts. We aim to share as much of our training as possible with the wider UK broadcasting industry, for free, equipping people with skills they need for a lifetime of employability in an ever-changing media landscape.”

Edward Morgan, Head of the College of Production says; “We want this website to support, not substitute, professional hands-on training. Of course, the very best way to learn is by doing. You can’t learn how to shoot, edit, run a team, or be a brilliant researcher just from a website. But you can be inspired, refreshed, advised and then steered to the right formal training. We aim to celebrate best practice and innovation wherever it’s found. It’s about sharing expertise, enthusiasm and passion, and bringing the broadcast industry together. ‘The best, made easy – at the lowest cost’. The result, we hope, is a great, easy to use and useful site”.

Kaleb Nation Covers The Host Rumors

We were left scratching our heads at some of the things we saw online too. With over 2 million in hardback sales alone as a stand alone, adult, sci-fi novel The Host is a lot of things…sales disappointment isn’t one of them.

Susanna White to Direct The Host

Variety got the scoop!

Susanna White (“Nanny McPhee Returns”) is attached to direct the feature adaptation of “The Host,” author Stephenie Meyer’s follow-up to “The Twilight Saga.”

Nick Wechsler will produce the indie through his eponymous banner, along with Chockstone Pictures’ Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz.”

This is a change from Andrew Nichol, who was originally set as the writer/director. Note there are some websites claiming that production is starting this spring, that has not been confirmed. In our opinion, we would not think the production will really get underway until May, at the earliest, as Stephenie Meyer is fully embroiled with Breaking Dawn filming until then. She has been hands on with the Twilight Saga movies and most likely would have the same clout on The Host movie, especially since it’s a small indie company doing the project.

Of particular note is the Twilight connection. Susanna directed Generation Kill that co-starred Kellan Lutz. Kellan’s name has long been suggested by fans as a contender for Jared and Ian.

This film will depend on a sense of CGI, a love of romance and action. Check out this Susanna interview. It seems like she might have it all.

Update on “The Host” Movie Adaptation

TheHostPBGiven the recent announcement that a The Host paperback will contain a new chapter that Stephenie Meyer had to provide the film makers, it’s no surprise that the next bit of information about the the progress toward turning the book into a film is about the script.  Deadline Hollywood has new information that  Andrew Niccol, who penned the scripts for Gattaca and The Truman Show, is on draft number three of the script for The Host.  Niccol was chosen because Gattaca is one of Stephenie Meyer’s favorite science fiction films.  The two were introduced by the film’s producers and began working together towards a finished script.  Producer Steve Schwartz said, “There is very good chemistry in this group. Stephenie is a very smart collaborator, and she had an intuitive strong hunch he would be the right guy. Based on the script we’ve seen, we think she was right. We’re thinking this will be shot in early 2011.”  No casting decisions have been made yet, and it’s still uncertain if Niccol will also direct the film.  Read the whole story over at Deadline New York.

Stephenie Meyer On The Host Being Optioned For Film

Stephenie Meyer just updated her website to say,

“I’m so excited to be working with Nick Weschler, and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz to bring The Host to a visual format. They’ve all been a dream to work with, so lovely and collaborative, and I feel like we’re in a really good place to make a great movie together. And then to have Andrew Niccol writing and directing? Truly awesome. If you’ve never seen Gattaca, go watch it now. One of my favorite movies of all time. It’s such a great example of character driven science fiction, which is ideal for The Host, no? I’m having an absolute blast imagining different dream casts, which I would post if people didn’t take my silly blogs so seriously these days. I’m looking forward to seeing the cast lists you come up with in the fansite forums, and if any of them match mine.

So, very exciting. Yay Host!

XO
Steph”
